In a 59 save shutout in a 3-0 win over the Sharks. Previous record was Mike Smith with 54 saves about 2 years ago.

Good for Scrivens, he was a good soldier here.

Heck of a performance, looked at the shot chart, Sharks took a shot from pretty much everywhere in the Oilers' zone, only to be denied every single time. Props to Scrivens :suds:

Lots of props but where is the Oilers defense? McClellan said the Sharks took about 100 shots towards the goal - that's insane.

For the Oilers to ever go anywhere they will need a franchise goalie and a franchise defender. Only way to get those will be to stop drafting offensive dynamos with 1st and 2nd overall picks or trade one of those big names, which they don't want to do.

Wash, rinse repeat. Completely inept and short sighted management from ownership to staff.

I agree, there is no such thing as defense in Edmonton, except for Scrivens apparently.

I just don't get it. I mean I think I do, this is my theory - the Oilers are known as a franchise that dominated an era in the 1980s and did so by having one of the most explosive offenses ever known to the NHL. You have guys like Kurri, Gretzky, Anderson, Messier, Coffey, the list goes on and on and they were relatively "new" to the NHL since they came over from the WHL only in 1979.

So the bar was set pretty high right off the bat (5 Cups in their first 10-11 years?) and with that the identity of the team was established - they are an offense first, exciting team. Which is fine and dandy, when that was the style that was permitted.

That isn't and hasn't been the case since the early 1990s when the trap system was implemented more and more from Europe and teams started to use it more and more eventually leading to the "clutch and grab" era of hockey and defensively stifling teams like NJ, Dallas and (now) LA. Defense wins you playoff games - period.

The problem is that identity is so etched into Oiler brain that the whole franchise still believes that is the way to be successful. Successful teams adapt and they haven't done that in 20+ years.

As soon as that happens, I think we will see a change in their philosophy and that's when we will see true development from that franchise. The problem goes far deeper than just ownership, management and staff, it's a culture that hasn't accepted the game has changed.

It's bittersweet. Great record to hold. Being hung out to dry doesn't even cover this one because good lord, 59 shots. That's two high shooting games in one haha When will Edmonton decide to get some D and take a look around the league at how solid defensive cores help establish strong and lasting teams.
