Something weird going on in MTL. Habs' website, for a time this a.m., announced team was buying out Scott Gomez's contract. Not there now.

I have this sinking feeling he signs with the Canucks after he gets bought out

A tweet from Bobby Mac:

MTL could save $3.3M cash by buying out Gomez contract but would have salary cap hits of $3.5M, $4.5M, $1.66M and $1.66M for each of 4 yrs.

Of course, that's under the current CBA

I'm not buying that he has nothing left in the tank. He could windup being a steal for a team that signs him to a lower end contract.

this could be true ... I think signing a lower priced contract after his buy out might be a real psychological lift for him ... pressure to perform up to his huge contract would be gone

and he would still be getting paid by Montreal... so its not like he would be getting a low end money deal

I thought if they sent him to the minors none of his contract would count against the cap. Thats what I'd do. (even though I am not sure teams should be allowed to do that)

I think that's something they are going to address in the new CBA negotiations...atleast they should.

the period to buyout players doesnt start until June so thats probably why they pulled the announcement from the website

subtlely making it clear this is a ownership decision not a new GM/Bergevin decision

I feel like until there's a new CBA, that's a risky move.

That's a lot of cash to pay a guy to sit in the minors. Not a lot of owners have the stomach to throw that kind of money away.

Assuming it would still be allowed even.

I think for the Habs, the locked up cap space over 4 years is much more expensive than the wasted salary over 2.
and it is allowed (see Oilers v. Sheldon Souray)

Even if Scott Gomez doesn't play next year, he'll still come very close to his goal total from this season.

I know it's allowed now, my remark was more in line with whether it still would be under a new CBA.

Hell, the Sabres stashed some salary in Rochester this year. Big difference is that they've got an owner who's willing to shell out the cash for a chance at a Cup.

Next year... :L

I don't think so. Guys like Suter & Parise are going to be be signed no matter what. All teams can simply go buy what the cap was this year if they want.

yah ... i think GMs have to go forward with a business as usual attitude and the NHL office would tell them as much prior to July 1
