KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A semi carrying cattle overturned Friday morning, closing the westbound lanes of Interstate 70.
The crash happened near the Benton Curve just after 3 a.m.
The driver lost control and hit a curb before flipping the truck. He suffered minor injuries. His wife was in the cab of the truck and was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
At least 79 cows were being transported. Crews said they were working to corral one that got loose.
A HazMat truck was used to block open sections of the trailer to keep more cows from escaping. Authorities said they were bringing in professionals from Sedalia to set up a temporary corral, asses injuries and move the cows to a secondary truck.
Some cows will be euthanized, according to police.
The highway is expected to be closed for several hours. Drivers should use the 18th Street exit.
