I came here this morning fully expecting a firestorm of posts about Sabean's comments on Ralph and Tom's show yesterday. Instead I get nothing.

I realize the Posey/Cousins arguments are played out, but Sabean threw a hefty dose of gasoline on the fire yesterday when he said, “If I never hear from Cousins again or he never plays another game in the big leagues, I think we’ll all be happy. He chose to be a hero in my mind, and if that’s his flash of fame, that’s as good as it’s going to get, pal. We’ll have a long memory. Believe me, we’ve talked to (Mike) Matheny about how this game works. You can’t be that out-and-out overly aggressive. I’ll put it as politically as I can state it: There’s no love lost and there shouldn’t be.”

I have never been a huge Brian Sabean fan (although he does get a 3-year pass from me in honor of the 2010 World Series win), but those comments, to me, are absolutely HUGE and I love the fact that he had the stones to say something like that. Not only say it, but after Ralph tried to get him to backtrack, he stepped even further and backed up his comments again.

I know that people are going to shit all over Sabean for making those comments, but I could not agree more. For today, at least, Brian Sabean is my favorite executive in baseball.

Those are comments that fans and media-types will berate and shun, but players will understand and honor. I'm sure future free agents would love to sign with a GM and manager that care this much about their players. Maybe not anyone currently on the Marlins, but you get my drift. :)

The best part of what he said was something I was ranting about last week -- you never see the first basemen blown up on ground outs....because intentionally initiating contact with a defensive player is ILLEGAL.

Of course, everyone wants to focus on the "if he never plays again" comment, but to me the analogy he drew was absolutely HUGE.

I've always liked Sabes, but that was freaking awesome.

Peter Gammons today on KNBR:

"I think the whole culture of blocking the plate is stupid."

Well said, sir. Very well said.
