Let me start by saying that 2021 was an "off" year for the SEC as a whole. But, your analysis above is very unfair as it fail to consider the opposition. The SEC had 13 teams scheduled to play in the Bowls this year. NO other conference had that many. many of the SEC teams played teams that were correspondingly HIGHER in their conferences than the SEC team. As for your "mid-level"Read an AP article today by a guy named Newberry. It was the dominance of the SEC conference. He concentrated on Alabama and Georgia and named LSU and Florida as perennial powers.
Here is a statistic that he missed, at least for this year. Group 5 teams were 6-1 against Power 5 teams. The SEC mid-level teams were 0-3 against Group 5. This is not to imply that Group 5 teams are equal to the SEC. But the SEC is not the dominate power-house top to bottom as they are often made out to be. Other than Alabama and Georgia, the SEC was 3-7. They will end up 6-8.
