Giants designated him for assignment last week when they promoted Crawford and Stewart.

Not exactly someone the organization will miss. He'll serve the same role in Colorado as he did in SF - organizational depth.

Oh, and Sosa cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Fres-neck. I guess an ERA above 10.00 scares off the other teams....

Sosa's a complete mess right now. His arm slot is all over the place and he has no command of his off-speed pitches. I guess we've invested a lot of time and effort into him, so might as well play out the string. Maybe he pulls a Vogelsong.

According to Baggs, Sosa was demoted to Richmond. Could he be considered nothing more than org depth at this point?

Sad...

So much promise. He compares to Merkin Valdez all too well. Both once big fastball flamethrowers with decent/rough offspeed stuff. Both injury prone. Both failed commanding the ball and eventually lost the bit heater.

At least Merkin got a taste of the majors.

... and probably only because those were worse Giants' teams. Though, there were times when he seemed almost unhittable in the bigs. Sosa may never know that feeling.

P Toupe was actually a pretty gnarly pitcher there for a while. If it weren't for his glass arm, we would be talking about Weezy the way we talk about Romo now (good, but infuriating at times -- VERY good, but replaceable).

His injuries killed any career he may have been able to do.

Hey Cam, long time. How are the little ones?

Hey Stokes - It has been a while. I have been out of touch on purpose because I cannot stand the runboard Giants board any longer. It just became too much about infighting for me to tolerate, so I left. When I had to find an outlet for my Giants thoughts, I found this place. It rocks. But then my company put some absolutely insane deadlines in front of me and I was working 12-hour days for months at a time and just could not pull myself away.

Fortunately, most of those deadlines have passed and I should be here on a more regular basis.

As for the little ones, both are playing soccer full time. I am coaching them both and have even been named head of the league in which they play, so I am keeping busy, no doubt.

Still tipping back the Speakeasy beers and still loving every last drop. Been to one or two of the Firkin Friday night sessions in the City before the games.

How's life with you?

Well, sign of getting older, I have had both my hips replaced. One in January, one in April. I had no cartilage left in either one. (Indiana Jones syndrome: it's not the age, it's the mileage!) Doing great, physically, now. I am walking two miles a day without pain. I am hoping to be back on the pitch refereeing soccer in the fall. Probably start with the 10-12 year olds, NOT the 19 year olds! I never really could keep up with those guys, even when I was 19!

My son has another year at UCLA doing Aerospace Engineering, and my daughter is finished her freshman year at Cal Poly SLO. She loves it there, and we love that she loves it there.

The economy has messed with the family income, but we continue to plug away. Enjoying the Giants' season so far, especially when they win!

Right on Stokesy! Glad to hear you're up and around again. With the titanium joints, you'll be reffing for decades!

Wow. Double hip replacement and you are already up and walking 2 miles per day. That is awesome.

What scares me is that my kids sound like younger versions of yours. I have two straight-A students for kids. The boy made the President's Honor Roll at school for having A's on every report card all season and the girl got two academic awards for being the top student in her grade. When I read your statement about having one at UCLA and one at Cal Poly SLO, I imagine a mixture of pride and sticker shock at the schooling costs. I know my son and daughter have 7 and 10 years left, respectively, but I don't think it's too early for a little bit of worry to set in.

Thanks for the update.

Glad you're up and around. A friend, and fellow Giants die-hard, had that surgery, and they botched it up pretty badly (he's currently involved in a class-action suit). They got it right the second time around, and now he is like you, walking a couple miles a day with wife and dog.

I grew up in SLO, and I'm putting an offer in on a condo today, so I'll likely remain here for quite some time now. If you or your daughter need anything, please don't hesitate to ask. Between my parents, fiance and friends, I have connections in just about every industry down here. You know it's more about who you know, and SLO is certainly no exception. I'm happy to help, if I can.
