i'm no GM but i thought it'd be fun to take a look at the Niners FAs and their contracts. What do you guys think? I'm no capologist and most of this is off the top of my head, so feel free to give me some input...

UFA:
Brooks - solid part of our d and still improving, needs to be brought back. try to get him at 4 yrs- 15 mil

Costanzo - awesome special teams player - bring back at 2.5 mil for 3 years

Ginn - showed huge improvement as a receiver. clearly valuable as a returner - still i'd only give him returner-type money. no more than 3-4 mil for 2 years.

Goldson - franchise tag him. I'd like to see him do it again. at around 6.25 mil, the safety tag isn't all that bad. I don't think he'll take a reasonable long term contract (just like last year) so we might as well lock him up for one more reasonable year and see if reggie smith or a rookie can develop.

tavares gooden - bring him back at the vet min (750k) unless we draft another LB

Josh Morgan - he's a valuable receiver for us in the system we have. I'd like to see him come back and he should be reasonable considering his injury. maybe 4 mil for 2 years.

Peelle- bring him back at vet min or practice squad if we draft promising TE

chilo rachel - offer vet min if there is an open roster spot. otherwise, adios!

Rogers - we need to bring him back for 3-4 years. Sounds like he wants to come back so maybe there will a hometown discount. perhaps around 5 mil per year for 4 years, 12 mil guaranteed.

Moran Norris - gone

Alex Smith - The way I see it with Alex is that he needs us as much as we need him. I still don't think there is a ton of interest out there from other teams, and if there is it's most likely for a backup spot. In that sense, I'd play hardball with him. He's made a ton of money with the Niners already and I think that should play into the negotiations considering he earned a lot of that while playing pretty poorly. I'd be willing to do a 4 year contract at 25 mil with 14 mil guaranteed. I think that's more than reasonable and I'd be shocked if he could get anything close to that with another team.

Reggie Smith - He's a tough one bc I think he's a legit starter who probably is frustrated that goldson stole his spot at the beginning of the year. I'd love to keep him but he may look elsewhere. try to bring him back for a couple more years at a couple mil a year.

Adam Snyder - he should get backup money bc that's what he should be for us. He's a good backup to have and hopefully we can still keep him, but I wouldn't give him more than 2 mil a year. I'd go with a long term deal to entice him to stay.

Brett Swain - minimum deal. valuable on special teams. doubtful about his receiving skills

Madieau Williams - let him go. get younger

RFAs:
Brock - definitely resign him

Larry Grant - would love to keep him but he's going to be too costly. likely gone

Spillman - great on special teams, promising young talent. bring him back

and finally,
i'd trade crabtree for the best draft pick we can get (maybe a 3rd?). His stock is as high as its going to get after a 70+ catch season and almost 900 yards. for a Wr that gets no separation it'd be awesome to get a 3rd rounder for him. It's time to move on. Maybe try to use the extra space to get bowe or stevie johnson and then draft alshon jeffries or sanu...suddenly the WR spot would look a lot more promising.

thoughts???

Nice post. That Alex made a lot of money when he was playing poorly won't be a factor at all in the negotiations. I don't know if we could even get a 3rd rounder for Crabs. Basically, Niners need to work hard to keep the defense intact, upgrade the WR position, and make a smart deal with Alex Smith. If there's another suitor out there willing to blow him away with lots of money, we just have to let him walk.

I honestly don't think he will walk. I wouldn't pass up the chance to stay with Harbaugh, a guy who brought the best out of you and a team on the rise. Not to mention leaving would mean another new system, and coaching staff/players etc. I bet he is the first guy signed.

agreed. there is no way he will leave for another team. we might as well take advantage of that.

Alex is going to get a contract in the 10 million per year range. There will be outs built in to the contract so the 49ers aren't going to be locked in, but he earned it based on the 13-3 record and the Saints game.

that would be very disappointing. His teammates and coaches contributed so much to his success this year and he owes it to them to take a reasonable contract. If Alex gets 10+ million per year then you can say goodbye to 1 or 2 of these 3: rogers, goldson, and brooks. It also leaves little chance of signing any sort of WR threat. Alex owes it to the team to take less and the Niners should know that he doesn't want to go elsewhere to learn yet another offense. I really hope Baalke does the right thing and plays hardball with him...he's going to do it with rogers, goldson, and brooks. why not alex too? The Niners' FO has the upper hand here and they should use it.

Another thing to consider...
if Alex gets anything above 5 million a year (which is all but certain) don't you think it's ridiculous that he will be paid more than Harbaugh. It's just so funny to me how this stuff works. As a Niners fan I'd much rather ensure that I have Harbaugh than Alex Smith, and thus be willing to pay Harbaugh more. It's so weird how overvalued the QB position is with mid-level and lower tier starters.

This is probably realistic and I dont like it all. Smith does not seem worth 10 mil at all.

For what he does for our team(such limited passing), I'd say 6 million would be fair but I know its not realistic.

i agree. there isn't another team out there willing to pay him anything close to 10 million per year. and i think alex needs harbaugh more than harbaugh needs alex...a huge bargaining chip that the Niners need to utilize. If they don't then that will be the reason why our D won't be as good next season...we'll lose guys like rogers, goldson, and brooks due to Smith's big contract.

The same way it's funny teachers are drastically under paid compared to what their students go on to make?

I don't blame Alex for this loss at all. I am all for bringing him back and looking forward to see his continued progression. Baalke should be able to get a fair deal out of this and then move on to Rogers, Goldson, and Brooks. I am very impressed with Snyder's progression as well and hope to see him back as he shouldn't be too costly.

I wouldn't mind bringing back Morgan for the right amount, but we still need to add at least 2 WR's through FA or the draft. Spencer should be cut as well.

UFA:
Brooks - not a top priority but if the price is right back I hope he is back.

Costanzo - He is not one of my top 3 to re-sign, but I think he is one that needs to be re-signed. He is a our leader on special teams.

Ginn - I'm 50/50 on bringing him back. He is a great returner but a poor receiver. If you figure we re-sign Morgan then we have Crabtree, Morgaon, hopefully a free agent or top draft pick WR, and Williams on the roster next year. Where does this leave Ginn? I only bring him back as a returner, and I doubt that is what Ginn wants at this point in his career. I say he goes to a team willing to use him at WR.

Goldson - 1 of my top 3 that has to come back. He is vital to the back end of our defense. If we lose him we get worst on defense.

tavares gooden - If he gets a better offer then so be it.

Josh Morgan - I think he is our best WR so this is a must. I doubt he gets a lot of interest coming off the injury so should not be to hard to re-sign. He is by far our best blocking WR and most physical WR.

Peelle- not a top priority re-sign if we can upgrade the position else where.

chilo rachel - yeah I say he is gone. I wouldn't even offer him a contract.

Rogers - another player I consider a top 3 must re-sign. He is our best cover corner and was vital to our defensive success this season.

Moran Norris - gone (agree)

Alex Smith - The last of my top 3 must re-sign. He just had his best season in the NFL, and you don't let a sub 30 QB go that just took you to the NFC Championship game. I don't see much trouble in re-signing him though since both sides want it.

Reggie Smith - I'm thinking he is gone. I like him as well but we have to many players at the position so I doubt we end up being his best offer.

Adam Snyder - With Rachal probably not even getting an offer sheet from us Snyder is a guy that needs to be re-signed. I'm not saying to priority but I think he is pretty close to it. I only let him walk if some team over values him. Snyder was great a RG though and can back up the C as well.

Brett Swain - Bye-bye

Madieau Williams - bye-bye

RFAs:
Brock - we will probably match any offer on him because I doubt he gets starter money anywhere

Larry Grant - I think he stays and we match any offer he gets. He can back up both MLB spots and is great on special teams. He only walks if the offer is just to high.

Spillman - he also probably returns and just read what I wrote about Brock for my thoughts on it.

Do whatever we can to keep the D in tack/maybe let someone go without dropping off production.

Make the offense as strong as we can, i do not wanna see another season wasted or end up like this one did after the D carried our ass all the way here basically and played there ass off!

Not at all? 1-13 on 3rd downs and he gets a free pass? All those throws in the dirt and nothing? Really? Ok....

Those throws were in the dirt for a reason. Nobody got open and he couldn't stay in the pocket for the 5 seconds that getting open would require.

They were in the dirt because he short-armed them. Too many people giving these guys too many excuses. Alex Smith was a big reason why they lost that game.

Agreed.
i'm sick of all these comments about Alex throwing the ball in the dirt. It's like these guys don't understand the game at all.

what a joke! did you watch the game? did you see Crabtree completely blanketed on those throws? Do you want Alex throwing it into an obvious interception? Wow...

Nope, didn't watch the game. Haven't watched one single game in the 30 years that I've been a fan of this team. You're right, Alex might have thrown an interception. I forgot, no QB that has ever won a SB has ever thrown an interception. Wow...

At all? He was terrible in the 4th quarter and OT. Just abysmal. Whatever else was happening on the field, he had open receivers 20 yards from him and he was one-hopping balls to them. Repeatedly. I think Alex bears as much blame as anyone not named Kyle Williams for this loss. Granted I don't think the playcalling did him too many favors.
