Czarda...

Once healthy, the Redskins expect to use Fuller quite frequently, even as a rookie.

Head coach Jay Gruden recently mentioned that depending on where Fuller fits best, it allows the defense the option of moving Bashaud Breelandicon-article-link.gif around, too.

“I think he’s big enough to play corner, but we also think he’s got a skillset to play nickel, which is very important,” Gruden said. “Ideally, we’d like to keep him at nickel, and keep Breeland outside. If he can play outside, we can move Breeland inside to nickel. I think he’s got a skillset where he can play both corner and nickel, which is very important nowadays to be versatile."

He's a long shot but I got excited at the clips of RB Travis Greene breaking ankles at Bowling Green. Man is that guy quick!

Mike Jones...

The Washington Redskins on Saturday held the second session of their three-day rookie minicamp, giving seven draft picks, 14 undrafted free agent signings and 33 tryout players an opportunity to learn the system and attempt to impress coaches and team officials.

Five second-year players — running back Mack Brown, offensive linemen Austin Reiter, Takoby Cofield, Cody Booth and defensive lineman Corey Crawford — also took part. All are technically considered in their first year because of a lack of playing time in 2015.

Players arrived Friday, received a crash course in half the playbook, practiced, then had the second half of the playbook thrown at them this morning before returning to the practice field, so it’s tough to get a definitive picture of their capabilities. But here are some observations from Saturday’s practice:

  • First-round pick Josh Doctson, listed as 6-foot-2, 202 pounds, naturally stands out. Doctson said the Redskins’ pass routes differ from those at Texas Christian mainly because the pro game has deeper breaking in and out routes. He also said he probably has run more double-move routes in the past two days than he did all of last season. Doctson observed veterans Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson in action earlier this week during voluntary workouts. He said both lead more by example than they do vocally. But he’s fine with that, because at TCU, he had the same leadership style.
  • Doctson had a hard time getting an accurate pass thrown his way Saturday. He routinely got separation, but on one red zone play, rookie quarterback Nate Sudfeld led Doctson out of bounds on a fade, and another time, Doctson broke to the inside and Sudfeld threw to the outside. At one point, Gruden told the quarterbacks that he was going to just throw the passes himself if they couldn’t do better. Gruden later chuckled and said it was “a meaningless threat,” but added, “When we have a 6-2 1/2 wideout, who has a 40-inch vertical, there’s nothing more that drives me crazy than having it be thrown out of bounds, so I got a little upset.”
  • Cal wide receiver Maurice Harris, 6-2, 195, looked pretty smooth running routes, and had good hands. It’ll be interesting to see whether can find roster room since Garcon, Jackson, Jamison Crowder, Ryan Grant, Rashad Ross and Andre Roberts all remain.
  • Su’a Cravens, who played at inside linebacker Saturday, said he chose jersey number 36 because of the encouragement he received from Redskins fans on Twitter. The late Sean Taylor originally held that number, and Redskins fans have been waiting for the next great safety ever since Taylor’s murder in 2007. Cravens grew up idolizing Taylor and wore 21 in college, and has that number tattooed on his arm, but he knew that 21 is unofficially retired, and after some fans suggested he pick 36, he accepted the challenge and said he will do everything he can to live up to expectations.
  • Cornerback Kendall Fuller (third-rounder out of Virginia Tech) took the field for the opening stretching and warmups, but then went to a side field to work with trainers as he completes his rehabilitation from last fall’s microfracture surgery on his right knee. Fuller wasn’t expected to take part in this week’s minicamp. He says he’s about 95 percent back to full strength, and has no doubt that he will be ready to compete by training camp. Gruden said it’s possible that Fuller will work his way into the mix some time this offseason.
  • Undrafted free agent cornerback Lloyd Carrington (Arizona State) did well in press coverage during one-on-one red zone drills. He didn’t get himself into trouble because of over-aggression, but instead played with good patience. Coaches praised his efforts as he broke up several passes.
  • Sixth-round pick Sudfeld is certainly a project, but he at least looks the part, standing every inch of his listed 6-6. He has decent mobility as well, but looked indecisive at times.
  • On the flip side, tryout quarterback Vernon Adams (Oregon) looked very small, looking about two inches shorter than the listed height of 5-11. He didn’t make any impressive plays of note.
  • Undrafted free agent signing Kevin Bowen out of East Central (Okla.) also didn’t look as big as his advertised 6-9, 330. Maybe 6-7 or so. He moved pretty well, but coaches were working with him to do a better job of shooting with his hands.
  • Center Austin Reiter, a seventh-rounder that spent last season on the practice squad, returned from the offseason having added around 12 to 15 pounds of muscle. He said he’s approaching this season as if he deserves to start. Reiter obviously wasn’t wearing pads, but he appeared to move well, and did a decent job of staying in front of defenders, and getting to the next level on stretch running plays.
  • Running back Keith Marshall routinely was the second back up after Mack Brown, who spent time on Washington’s practice squad last season. Marshall tweaked his hamstring on Friday, so he appeared to favor his leg a little, but he said the knee injuries that limited him at Georgia are completely behind him and he aims to prove himself as an every-down back.
We’ll learn more about these players in the coming weeks. The offseason practice sessions the league calls “Organized Team Activities” begin in two weeks, and then we’ll see how some of these guys do against the veterans.

Lloyd Carrington:

STRENGTHS: Carrington is a highly aggressive defender who isn't afraid to latch on and re-route receivers. His willingness to extend his arms could draw flags in the NFL, but Carrington does it with subtlety, using his body to force wideouts near the sideline, essentially using the boundary as an aid in defense. He is very effective in this manner in part because he doesn't panic when the ball is in the air, showing excellent timing in his leaps and good hand-eye coordination to slap passes away just as the receiver attempts to make the catch.

Given the relatively short time he has played, Carrington shows above average route recognition and is rarely out of position. He's a reliable face-up tackler and is very good in run support, frequently fighting through blocks from receivers to stop backs near the line of scrimmage or ruin receiver screens thrown in his direction.
WEAKNESSES: Lacks great straight-line speed and pre-draft workouts will be key to final grading.
IN OUR VIEW: Like his former teammate Damarious Randall, Carrington possesses the combination of instincts and grit that could help his stock soar as a senior. Carrington may lack the straight-line speed scouts would prefer but his awareness and physicality fit in a zone-based scheme at corner. Clubs could see Carrington as a possible safety convert, as well.

Again...you are thinking we are going need based. If you are filing needs with UDFA, then you are seriously screwed.

I honestly have no idea what position Cravens will ultimately play but I suspect it will be SS, I can't believe he is big enough to be a full time LB. Regardless he will be a playmaker and I can't wait.

This guy is one of the real wildcards on offense. If he can somehow contribute this would be huge. However - he might just wind up being another forgotten late rd pick - we will see.

Me too. If you root for that school you should just worry about basketball. With their recent move to the Big Ten they are doomed in football probably for the next 10+ years.
