I get that Romo wants that. I'm saying that if he is going to a contender then he is going to have to come on their terms. He can go play for a bottom feeder that will pay him market value and not even bat an eye at the idea. If he wants to compete for a Super Bowl though he better be prepared to take a deal that highly favors the team over him personally but still allows him to get paid very well if he can stay healthy.

And I get that a contender (and their fans) want the world on a platter. But these players have agents, and most of these agents at this level of the profession are pretty good. I can understand the want for incentives, and that may very well happen. But I think it's a naive to think that Romo is going to accept a low base salary and a low potential for incentive - contender or not. You suggested an incentive driven 2yr/28-30m (7/7 base salary) deal, and I just can't see that as realistic. I guess we will see.

I'm just telling you what the Broncos want to do. I've talked to some people connected to the organization and yes they are interested in Romo but only if he is willing to come on that type of deal. They like both of their young QB's so the only incentive for them to sign Romo is if they get him on a very cap friendly deal. Otherwise let some bottom feeder with $80 million in cap space go pay him market value.

Honestly this is how most of the top teams operate. The Patriots and Broncos are both known as the 2 toughest teams to negotiate with. Agents hate dealing with them because they have very little wiggle room when it comes to contracts and how they want them designed. They explain to a player that they are coming to the team because they want to win Super Bowls and that only happens if the roster can be loaded from top to bottom so players have to be willing to sacrifice a little for that opportunity. Yes that means they miss out on some guys. Just happened to the Broncos with Earl Mitchell who signed with the 49ers for more money. Came back to the Broncos hoping they would up their offer and they said no.

Well if Jerry really is good friends with Tony Romo he wouldn't do that to him. He would release him as soon as the Post June-1st early release can happen so he can find the right team and get to work.
Tony and Jerry may be friends, but Jerry needs to do what is best for the Cowboys, not Romo. If that means trade, then he needs to get the best return. The Cowboys priority is not to worry about "doing that to him" or letting him "find the right team". It's a business and Romo has been paid handsomely for his service to the Cowboys even when he was too injured to play. If both can be accomplished then great, but Jerry's job is to run the Cowboys not make Romo happy. If no trade partners materialize, then they must decide if pre or post 6/1 is best

The Broncos and Patriots make up 6% of the NFL. They are not the only game in town. I understand the Broncos may have their feelings, but this conversation does not start and stop with them.

And I do agree with this. I just keep hearing about how Jerry if a trade is to happen would make sure that Romo is ok with where he is being traded to. I have no clue if that is actually true or not as yeah if I am the Cowboys and there is a great trade on the table I don't care if he is going to the Browns or the Broncos.

I still think though cutting him with a post June 1st designation makes the most sense. I can't see the Cowboys getting much in a trade with him having missed pretty much the past 2 seasons with injuries. I know I have had some Cowboys fans point out what Bradford got but he also played quite a bit in the years leading up to his trade. That also meant having to hold onto Bradford until something drastic happened which I guess the Cowboys could do with Romo hoping for a similar situation but they also then risk Romo getting hurt during that time and them being stuck with the full cap hit.

Agreed. I do know when you look at the top-2 teams linked to Romo though in the Texans and the Broncos good chance both would ask Romo to come on those types of deals. The Texans are already in big to 1 QB and know they can't afford another QB on such a huge deal so they would want an incentive driven contract so that if he did stay healthy the cap hit would come next year not this year.

Chiefs are hard up against the Cap as they are the 3rd team linked to him so again another team needing a very low first year cap hit.

Buffalo is a team to consider. One that I don't think is getting enough attention. Strong running game, good line and a good young receiver about to hit his prime. Also has some talent on the defense. The Bills have reportedly expressed interest, and is a team that couldn't likely lure Romo in an open market. Wouldn't be the worst landing spot.

They are also another team though with not a ton of cap space to work with. I'm also hearing they are planning on keeping Tyrod Taylor so doubt they are actually in the running anymore. They are working on a new deal with him that could be finished by the end of the combine.

So again it comes down to if he actually wants to go to a team that stands a chance of winning the Super Bowl he is going to have to at least meet the team half way. If he wants the money then by all means go play for a Browns type team.

I don't know anything about a contract extension for Tyrod Taylor, but I do know that according to Spotrac the Bills currently have about $25m in cap space. They can also free up another $13m by cutting Taylor, for a total of $38m. Now Buffalo has a little work to do to fill out the roster. But they could possibly bring in Romo and re-sign Gilmore and still have about $11-13m in space.

Fighting was maybe too harsh of a word. I'm trying to give Brady a ton of credit but also making sure the rest of the team gets their due as well. I'm not big into the QB getting all the credit and all the blame. A great example is that Brady has had 3 3 interception games in the playoffs. The won two of those games. I would say they won in spite of how Brady played. During the 2013 playoffs the Patriots lost but I would say Brady was one of the few reasons they were even still in the game.
Yes and all I'm doing is providing more facts so that the level of help can be put into context. It's not like I'm dismissing everything you've said. I don't even disagree with you. But there obviously needs to be more context when we simply say that "Brady hasn't won a Super Bowl with a defense outside the top 8 in scoring." The statement isn't false, but doesn't show the whole picture.

And I'm under no delusion that Brady is infallible in the playoffs, nor that he hasn't had a good amount of help. If you'll notice, I only referenced 2 playoff runs out of the 5 where he didn't need very good defense in order to win. The other 3, he still made the plays he needed to win the games, so he gets some credit but not nearly as much as 2004/2014 to me. The only thing is, so few QBs even have multiple playoff runs like that, and many guys who get in the "GOAT" conversation didn't have a single one.

Yeah and it's kinda funny, Manning had two playoff games throwing 3+ picks, and he's 1-1 in those. The one 3 INT game for Brady that sticks out to me as a "wow, we really should have lost that game" was 2006 against the Chargers. One of the picks was then fumbled by the intercepting player, and the Pats got the ball back with a first down, went down the field and tied the game with a TD+2 point conversion. Then took the lead on a FG, and Nate Kaeding missed for San Diego at the end of the game to try to tie it. All that happening in the last 6 minutes of the game.

Now, I know many Patriots fans who will say "well they caught breaks, but Brady took them down the field twice, once to tie and once to take the lead". Which is true, but I understand your sentiment. The guy threw 3 picks. I'm not giving him a ton of credit for that win.

That is something the Patriots have done more so than other teams. They have gotten the breaks and have made other teams pay for them. Houston this year caught the Patriots maybe having their worst game of the season. They had a great chance to really bury the Patriots early and really let those pass rushers go crazy. Instead they kept settling for field goals or not even scoring at all. Like I said about the Super Bowl this year the Patriots caught some breaks along the way but they actually took advantage of them.

Brady has been the master of that. And really the Pats one of the biggest things they have been able to do is not make the big mistakes that other teams do. Brady has benefited from the teams/coaches around him and they have benefited from having such a great QB like Brady. To me Brady is not recognized as the QB he is without Belichick but Belichick isn't recognized as maybe the greatest coach of all time without Brady. Like I said Brady fell into a very good situation but he has been part of what has helped make that such a good situation.

Just reporting what I have heard. Sounds like Tyrod is staying in Buffalo. If that is the case then the contenders conversation gets smaller and smaller and those teams are not going to spend big on Romo.

Agreed. I think the extremes of both arguments are pointless. It's pretty clear that Belichick and Brady are both great at what they do. One didn't make the other, they've both benefited. I think Brady will go down as the most accomplished QB of all time and that won't be close, and really, as a Patriots fan, that's all I care about.

Taylor doesn't seem like a long term answer to me and certainly wouldn't stop a team from bringing in Romo if they felt he could still be Romo.

I agree Tyrod most likely by teams isn't viewed as a long-term solution but neither is Romo. So if the Bills are signing Tyrod to a deal or reworking his contract it is with the idea that he is starting the next couple of years while they figure out who they want as the long-term solution. You don't sign a guy like Tyrod to a $15 million deal then also go sign Romo to another $15 million deal. That is just unheard of in this league. So to me if Buffalo decides Tyrod is their guy next year that takes them out of the running for Romo.

I don't see the Browns, 49ers, or similar team that is in a long term rebuilding project wanting to spend a lot of money on Romo since they won't be competing for anything in the short time Romo has left.

Romo would be more of a PR move for those types of teams. Tough to get people to want to come watch the games but if a big name like Romo shows up maybe they are more inclined to buy some tickets.

The other thing is this is a QB draft where most fo the guys are not viewed as year 1 starters. So maybe the team is looking for a guy to help train up the young guy while also keeping the team looking decent.

The PR move I don't see with that kind of price tag when these teams have so many other needs to fill with that cap money. He would be a good bridge QB to a younger guy if it weren't for his price tag. As a fan of a rebuilding team I am interested in getting that QB out of college than a guy who isn't going to be around longer than a couple of years.

You are 100% correct here. I don't even think Romo would consider these type teams

Price tag actually isn't that bad if it is only at the $14 million range. I mean the Eagles were willing to pay Bradford $18 million. Throw in some of these teams probably have more cap space than what they know to do with. I mean I look at the Browns and $103 million right now in cap space. $14 million while a decent chunk still gives them plenty of room to spend elsewhere.

I could see a team like the Jaguars making a run at Romo. They have a good defense and it sounds like they don't view Bortles as the future of the QB position. So I could see them make a run at Romo and hope he is enough to get them over the top in a bad division.
