Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has a herniated disc in his back and will undergo surgery on Friday, sources tell ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. There is no timetable for Gronkowski's return. The Patriots will now turn to Martellus Bennett as their top tight end.

At Least 8 weeks is what I have heard and read.

If that is true, would you activate him for the Superbowl?

If they would make it to the SB, NO do not brink him back, just let him heal up for next year, with everything that he has had this year. Do not need lining him up in the SB and something jeopardize him for next year.

How much should we beat that he will be on stage somewhere picking people up and slamming them down on the ground?

No question that this is serious. Speculation is that Bill will IR him for the rest of this season including the Super Bowl. A typical person can return in two weeks as long as the work doesn't including lifting, bending and stretching. Considering how vigorous football is, and the fact that a typical person doesn't get hit by 200-250Lb humans running at full tilt, coming back in 8 weeks could jeprodize not only his career but his life.

Rob's dad won't let him come back until next spring.

I remember the last time Gronk was injured mid season and came back for the last game and playoffs. That didn't end well. Hopefully, BB recalls this and IR's him. He has had a lot of injuries and I frankly don't think his career will last much longer. BB brought back that TE from the Packers that he had released earlier this year. If the guy has anything at all, I look for him to be activated. A Super Bowl is still possible but the road just got a lot bumpier.

Derby is in Denver because he couldn't block my 87 yr old father.

Sucks that Gronk's back is FUBAR, but I think that barring more injuries that they can go back to the spread/5 wide shit they did years ago and be successful.

If he comes back this year he's a fool and I'll eat a beer. :dhd:

As much as I hate to say it IR him. Open up a roster spot now. Hopefully, he's back 100% next season? Reports are they're waiting till after the surgery to make the call.

I thought his family said we'll see you in 2017, and that time table depends on how the surgery went and what they found. Tough break, but we still have Marty who can do it all. Gronk can table his contract talk now and Bennett is due for a pretty damn good pay check if NE keeps him.

This is Gronks 3rd disc surgery and Dr Andrews thinks his playing days are over.

Gronk is IR'd.
I care about people so I'm not sure that I hope he doesn't quit.
Whatever's best for Gronk.....

Saw a video of Gronk walking around the hospital after surgery. He looked fine, was smiling and waving. Just from his posture and movement, I'd say he'll be ready for OTAs next spring. He did NOT look extremely stiff as many post spine surgery patients appear when they've had a procedure. He was walking with a 'walker'.

BB added RB DJ Foster to take Gronk's roster spot. If he wants to add another TE yet this season, I would rather opt for Owen Daniels, not Zack Sudfield. Tight end may now become a priority in next year's draft. There is only so much punishment a body can take before it begins to affect how well a football player can consistently perform.
