Odds are, I'm the only one here familiar with Raymond, and not only was I a fan of his music, I was fortunate enough to be able to call him a friend. He was a former member of the Grand Ole Opry, is one of the best banjo pickers of all time, and played at his Maggie Valley Opry House in North Carolina for many decades. When I was a kid I'd go with my grandpa probably 5 or 6 times every year to go up there and see him, and I'd make the trip a couple times a year as an adult. It was through Raymond that I got to meet a lot of bluegrass musicians that I idolized(Ralph Stanley, Doyle Lawson and Doc Watson)
He would always talk about music, and he made some of the best moonshine I've ever had.
He's been in declining health for a while, and lasted longer than we all thought he would. He held on until he was 80. But, I'm gonna miss my friend(one of the few people I know who have a Wikipedia page), and the bluegrass world lost a legend. Rest easy, old friend.
