His older brother JIm, whos's still alive but much less notorious, had a damn fine career as well.

On some summer's evenings in the 60's when the weather was just right I was able to pick up SF area radio stations on my little transistor radio.

I'd lie on the lawn and listen to the Giants games.

Gaylord and Juan Marichal.

McCovey, Mays and Cepeda.

Good times.

This is one of my favorite baseball stories (in a sport full of them)

I believe they are still the only brothers to have won the Cy Young award.

The year Jim won it, Gaylord was the runner-up in the NL to Bob Gibson......You could also argue that Sam McDowell should have won it in the AL.....

Sudden Sam...maybe! Or, Dave McNally. Or Mike Cuellar (Teammates McNally and Cuellar both won 24 games...and, both hit grand slams...Cuellar in the ALCS against the Twins, and McNally in the WS against the Reds...now what are the odds on that????).

McDowell had four fewer wins than Cueller/McNally while pitching for a much worse team. The O's won 32 more games, their lineup averaged about one more run per game than the Indians and he had a very good defense behind him. McDowell had them beat in ERA, ERA+, IP, strikeouts and had more WAR than both combined. I think Palmer was the best of the O's pitchers that year.

But you know, Jim Perry was given the award. It wasn't uncommon for teams at the top to get the big awards. Boog Powell of the O's won the MVP Award that year too. I always liked Sudden Sam, but his bouts with alcohol shortened his career in the 1970s.
