It's a fair bit of cash....

Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman has signed a four-year contract extension worth $57.4 million, a deal that reportedly makes him the NFL's highest-paid cornerback.

Sherman announced the deal Wednesday on his Twitter account and on his blog page, saying that the extension includes $40 million in guaranteed money.

"The goal has always been to stay in Seattle and continue to play for the Seahawks," Sherman wrote on his blog. "With this chapter closed, I can continue to focus on what is important -- defending our Super Bowl Championship and being the best cornerback in the NFL.

"This is a great moment for my family, foundations and the people who supported me to this point. Hard work and execution got me to this moment, the Seattle Seahawks have backed up that respect with this contract. The terms of my deal are 4 years for a total of $57.4M with $40M guaranteed. There is no other city or team that I would want to play football for."
Sherman, 26, has emerged as one of the NFL's top defensive players since being selected by Seattle in the fifth round of the 2011 draft.

The 6-foot-3 Sherman led the league with eight interceptions this past season and was one of the most important contributors to the first Super Bowl championship in Seahawks franchise history.

So the Seahawks were dumb enough to bank our future on the best FS in the league, best SS in the league, and the best corner in the league. Next year they're probably going to dumb enough to throw a bunch of money at arguably the best young QB in the league. So stupid to bank your future on four players!

Signed,
every 49ers troll.

That is a hefty chunk of change but the pillars of our defense are all locked up long term.

Sherman
Thomas
Chancellor
Bennett

All those guys are going to spend their primes in Seattle. Good news!

Anyone know if this supersedes next season's deal, or if it is an additional 4 years, after this season?
I'm guessing supersedes, but I don't see it in the ESPN article.

For some reason I don't think that will be an issue with Sherman.

Well we all know the Seahawks have the best secondary in the league and now that their contracts are up, the Seahawks have to pay them for being the best. It's a lot of coin and the front office did a hell of job working the cap to make it possible. Seahawks fans can look forward to wacthing the LOB for the next few years, here's to no serious injuries to any of them.:suds:

I'm guessing it's an extension with a signing bonus. No reason for the Seahawks to have it supercede this years contract. Looking forward to details on the contract.

It's in addition to next season. His bonus will be split up over the next 5 seasons including next season, but his new base doesn't go up until 2015. Similar deal to Thomas. His hit against the cap this year is only 3.676m because of them deferring the new base for an extra year.

Here are his new cap numbers for the next few years.

» Over the Cap- Richard Sherman Salary Cap and Contract Page

And now the Seahawks still have 10.7m left for this cap season. Here's the full team breakdown.

» Over the Cap- Seattle Seahawks 2014 Salary Cap and Contracts

Still have enough room for the draft picks and to get something done with Baldwin if they can agree on the number of years.

btw, it was a little over 11m in signing bonus that will be spread out over the next 5 seasons.

I'm sure that's why it wouldn't matter that his new base doesn't go into effect until 2015. He's still taking home a nice chunk of change this year and is set for years to come with 40m guaranteed.
