the stats don't lie, it's his crytptonite.Too bad this wasn't a SNF/MNF game....Dalton stinks with the lights on. 1PM Sunday Dalton is a HOF'er....
I know it was special teams like you said, but that stop on 4th down on the fake punt by Carolina was a huge break up by Anthony. May be special teams but played like a pass play and that stop was crucial. He did a great job on that play.Good win. They did what they had to do. One major silver lining so far this season is how many good players we might have found in the draft. Mims was terrific. Jenkins was a monster. All Jr. has been awesome all season. Rehnko has been a weapon at punter. Anthony made a great play on special teams. And, we still have Burton, Newton, and Matt Lee.... Did we finally nail a draft?
Andy should be backing up on a good team that is going to the playoffs. but at least he's playing now, so I guess that's ok.Also, I just want to say, Andy Dalton is still a pretty good QB. That last minute drive reminded me of his time in Cincinnati though, Took forever, and was a wasted minute.
There isn't a scheme available that can cover up poor play..... I don't exactly know what CTB was doing today, but he looked like one of the worst corners in the league - Not the future star many thought we had on our hands. Not sure if he is hurt or what. As for the other open receivers - Pass rush is definitely a major limiting factor. We already know that Dalton is a good QB when he plays in rhythm - The book with him is that you have to get him rattled and make him start pressing. I don't know what the PFF grades will look like, but Dax looked okay out there on plays I saw him involved and I thought Turner looked active. I'm less impressed with Gino Stone than I had hoped and Vonn Bell is too damn old. Time for Jordan Battle.I know it was special teams like you said, but that stop on 4th down on the fake punt by Carolina was a huge break up by Anthony. May be special teams but played like a pass play and that stop was crucial. He did a great job on that play.
Our defense looks like shit. WE have so many injuries, but even without them, we can't stop the run, rookie WR's seem to be open all over the field against us. If not for them dropping so many passes this could have been a different game. We are going to get our asses pounded by Baltimore with this defense, because you can't expect the offense to run wild on Baltimore's defense.
I'm basically in full agreement with your points. I saw the game the same way. A few things:Overall thoughts (and it's gonna be long rather than multiple posts):
1st - a win is a win...that's all that matters. So, that was a good thing.
This offense is really, really close to clicking at an elite level. They are 3rd in DVOA on offense - and really, other than week 1, haven't looked terrible.
I'm going to start where I usually lament - the running game. THIRTY called runs! 30! Treinta! 31 called pass plays. That's as balanced as you can get. Now, I realize that 50/50 isn't the goal here...I'd be very happy with 60-40ish and that should be the goal. They have Burrow, and he is going to have the ball in his hands more than not, but they HAVE to commit to the run game. Not only will it open up the backend of the defense for more passing, it will help Burrow and the OL as it will keep the DL from crashing down on every play.
Moss is a fine RB, but Brown should clearly, IMO, be RB1. He just runs different. Moss is a good counter balance to Brown, but if they run the ball 30 times, I would want 20/10 with Moss likely seeing a bit more 3rd down and passing...though we all know what Brown can do in catching a ball...Brown just runs like his hair is on fire. His explosion and speed are at another level compared to Moss. Again, not that Moss has been bad...not at all - just means how good Brown has been.
Is there another WR stronger than Chase pound for pound? I don't think there is. He reminds me of Steve Smith so much. Not the 'biggest' WR out there, but damn you can't tackle the guy. He is freakishly strong. I was concerned with his height/build coming into the league and projection as being the teams #1 WR...but dude is setting records. Let's be honest....can we just pay the man?
Eric All is going to be a really good TE. He blocks, blocks downfield, can catch it and looks already very good at what he does. He led all TE's yesterday in snaps...and 3rd game in a row with at least 4 catches.
Mims is a beast. He had 1 bad snap yesterday, and that still should have led to a TD. Just the 4th time in 56 career games that Burrow was not sacked....that is not a misprint. It was the 1st time since September of 2021 - more than 3 years ago. That is a sad, sad stat...one that hopefully does not get continued with how well it looks like this line is playing.
Speaking of the one bad snap by Mims, that INT wasn't on Burrow...Chase cut back across the field headed to the middle and was wide open. Burrow saw him and threw the ball to where Chase was going, but Chase wasn't looking for the ball. He cut back towards the sideline, and suddenly the ball was floating in the air with not a single Bengal in sight. Tough go because that had the makings of a massive highlight reel play.
The Bengals have found a punter, gentlemen. With nine punts, Ryan Rehkow doesn't qualify for the NFL lead (he's 1 attempt short). However, his 58.4 average and 49.7 net would not only lead both categories but would be NFL records. The single-season records are 53.1 and 46.0. Having a guy who can flip the field, and a FG kicker who is almost in range at the 50....weapons.
Turner played a very good game once he came in. CTB can make plays, but he allows himself to get beat too often in press/single coverage. He talks a lot - and CB's need that confidence, but he's getting to the point where he needs to shut his mouth and just go make plays.
Vonn had an INT off a tipped pass...but neither he, nor Stone, have impressed. What the hell has happened to Battle? Can we get some snaps out of him?
Pratt has had 2 really bad games this year...a guy who has been around as long as he has shouldn't be out of position as often as it seems he is, and yesterday I watched him get bullied more than a few times in the run game. Several missed tackles. He's got to start getting more downhill because he's getting eaten alive in read-react right now.
Can ANYONE get to the QB (not named Trey)?
Jenkins - welcome. Can't wait to see what he can do with 2 hands.
Bengals defense did just enough yesterday - so a small step forward, I suppose....but they need a lot of help, and Lou is going to have to figure out new ways to get pressure because continuing to rush 4 on 3rd downs is just allowing the other teams' QB to sit there all day long. Especially if Trey misses time with an injury.
If Trey is out - I've said this before, but I'll say it again - they need to go after Lawson. He's on Dallas' practice squad. Has injury issues, yes - but Bengals don't need to sign him to be a 13 game player - or even full time - they need him 50% (mostly 3rd downs) and in a heavy rotation, even with Trey and Murphy are healthy. Can't understand why they wouldn't want to add a veteran pass-rusher who has at least some history of getting to the QB.
When the Bengals forced a punt yesterday, it was the 1st punt forced in 11 drives (not including kneel downs). It was midway through the 4th quarter of the KC game, I believe.
