With the first round of FA and the draft done and over with, here is my "short" list of available FA that I think the Niners should kick the tires on, in no particular order:
Nick Chubb RB
I am flat out not convinced that we are going to have CMC healthy all season long and I'm not exactly sold on Guerendo and James as our RB2/3. Chubb is coming off of injury but is a bonafide beast when healthy. If his knee checks out, he'd be some serious thunder behind CMC and a solid RB2 should something happen to CMC.
Amari Cooper/Keenan Allen WR
I put these two dudes together because they are both unbelievable route runners, which allows Purdy to count on them being where they need to be, when they need to be there. With Aiyuk out on PUP and Robinson likely suspended for his DUI for the first 3-4 games, the Niners could use some proven guys to put with JJ and Ricky. Allen would be my choice.
Gerald Everett TE
If Kittle misses any time, God help us. Our TE room sucks out loud. Everett at least would provide some receiving ability to a room void of it if Kittle is out.
Asante Samuel Jr/Stephon Gilmore CB
We are WEAK at CB outside of Green and DMO. We are hoping Stout is awesome but then we are expecting a rookie to pop. Even if that were the case, the guys behind those 3 are either unproven or injury-prone. Samuel is coming off injury so a Verrett-like "prove-it deal" may work. Gilmore is long in the tooth but knows how to play and would provide veteran help in the CB that is very young. Both players could be had for short deals based on their individual circumstances.
Matt Judon DE
If I'm being real, I'm not a fan of Judon but I am a fan of the type of player he is relative to what I believe our needs are. Outside of Bosa, we have no other proven pass rushers on the team. We hope our rookies will pop, but we are thin at DE and even thinner on pass rushers specifically. This is where I wish we kept Floyd. I would love to use Mychel Williams on base downs and bring a player like Judon in to rush the passer. Allow the rookie to ease in to the position and learn/earn his way to rushing the passer. In the meantime, having a guy who can get after it would be huge and very helpful to the defense.
