Mets release pitcher Oliver Perez | MLB.com: News

The Met's have now cut ties with 2 "big" contracts this spring. The Giants MAY view this and not think they will be ridiculed being the only team eating losses...

Hey, ego plays a part in EVERYTHING. Remove the ego hit, and the Giants may be able to do the right thing.

He serves no purpose on this team at this point and he'll be blocking Belt when he comes up anyway.

Schierholtz and Ishikawa serve better off the bench anyway. Nate has better speed and defense and is a LHH, with DeRosa and Burrell (when Belt comes) as RHH, we need more lefties anyway. And Ishikawa was on of the best pinch hitters last year and it seemed like he was involved in every late inning rally.

Rowand thinks he's still the player of 2007 and is apparently unhappy in his role. I'd release him.

It's a shame too.

Even though I have no science behind this I will always feel Padilla's domeshot ended Gamer's useful career. He was/is a good player, a winner.

This

I have said almost this same thing numerous times. I was hopeful he would be able to make a comeback with some time separating now and the hit, but dude appears to be done now.

Except that we would have to part with Nate or Ishi in order to do that. Both of them are more valuable to the team that RoRo...

The only thing blocking Belt will be his Super 2 date....RoRo is of no consequence.

i disagree with the headshot ending Rowands career. Rowands career has been over since he came to SF. he hasnt been able to come close to the numbers he put up in philly. i remember two or three years ago being at a game in the CF bleachers. Rowand made an error and all the fans were on him. there was a we want schierholtz chant going.

Which will be the 10th day of the season this year. Lets look at the probable roster.

Lincecum
Cain
Sanchez
Bumgarner
Zito

Wilson
Romo
Affeldt
Lopez
Ramirez
Casilla
Suppan/Runzler

Posey
Whiteside

Huff
Sandoval
Tejada
Sanchez
Fontenot
DeRosa
Ishikawa
Belt

Torres
Ross
Burrell
Schierholtz
Rowand

Thats 27, so I think Rowand is released and Schierholtz is traded after the 9th day of the year IMO (or when Belt is ready).

agree with sf

even Rowand's semi decent stretches was littered with abominable strikeouts and overthrows.

he was "the best" FA that would consider going to the Giants at the time and management was looking to make some statement signing to keep folks interested..Let's turn the page with him and Zito and wash our hands of that past era

Pre-headshot he was solid. No way he was going to match the Philly numbers going from the hitterest park in the NL to the 2nd pitcherest. And remember with the Chisox he had a hitters park too. Tons of blame for the Giants brass for getting fooled by those venues and overpaying, but Rowand really is/was a gamer.

I will be sad when he goes, and I think it's a Dickie Thon shame (look it up) too.

P.S. the whole country was fooled into thinking the Phillies were the '27 Yankees because of that park. Once they got a load of our pitching, game over.

Dickie Thon?

No way are the story's the same. Thon was a budding stud when he got beaned. RoRo was a falling (dull) star. Dickie's event was a CLEAR career changer. RoRo's is simply the final nail in the coffin.

i gotta disagree with you man

for a center fielder his offensive stats werent horrible prior to this year. but considering hes making nearly triple what the average outfielder makes (couldnt find a recent number but in 2008 the average outfielder salary was Outfield 4,756,936 79).

also the fact hes quite a bit slower than most center fielders, in reality he's probably too slow to play center in AT&T, and he strikes out well over 100 times a year consistently.

in 2009 he hit .260, with 15 jacks and a .319 on base.

dont get me wrong. he definitely is a gamer. if it was about heart he'd be up there for sure. not many guys are gonna break their face to catch a ball. then again, not many guys are going to refuse to move from center to left, a position more fitting for their ability.

it is almost moot to argue the qualities of gamer

just remember this: he was signed to be a power bat when no other power bat would come to SF.

a few seasons later, the Giants had to move him to leadoff! after bouncing him around the lineup just to get some production outta him.

good guy, but now just a roadblock for the Giants to take this team to the next level. No more dead weight!

What exactly is the "next level" for a team that just won the World Series?

(I still love saying that)

In our park that's not too bad, coupled with good defense.

Like Zito, it's not his fault he got overpaid.

Look, I agree he's dead weight now, I just really liked the guy as a player, and we disagree on why he's gone from solid to lousy. I agree it seems odd he's fighting the move to LF so much.

I didn't say the stories were 'the same', but if you can't see any parallel I guess we'll just agree to disagree on both Rowand's value pre-beaning (again, I agree he's wildly overpaid but it's the same argument with Zito: take away the paycheck issue and you had a valid contributor) and the reason for his sad decline. I think Gamer's event was just as clear of a career changer. I do agree Thon had the potential to be a big star in a way Rowand did not.

Which will be the 10th day of the season this year.

This has been making the rounds lately, due to a blog a couple of days ago I think. Unfortunately, it's not true.

Here's the rule for arbitration:

A player with less than six years of service time is eligible for salary arbitration if he:

1. is without a contract for the next season, AND
2. has been tendered a contract offer by his current team by the tender deadline, AND
3. cannot agree with his current team on a new contract, AND
4. meets one of the conditions below:
a. has been on a major league roster or disabled list for at least three years, OR
b. has at least two years of major league service but less than three, AND is among the top 17 percent for cumulative playing time in the majors in this class of players, AND was on an active major-league roster for at least 86 days in the previous season.

I'm not sure what the fallacious ten day period denotes, but it isn't Super Two status as Belt would certainly fall in the top 17 percent for cumulative playing time if he were called up mid-April and remained on the roster/DL through the end of 2012. The Super Two date is usually around June 8, give or take a couple of days.

According to MLBTradeRumors, the 9 day thing is for Free Agency, not Arbitration...

Why, 2 World Series of course :)

(also, a diminishing reliance on signing over valued free agents..)
