...but we're lucky and that pretty much comes standard for hockey players (one of the reasons i like hockey so much)

Myth! Hockey players get DWIs/BWIs, beat their girls/wives(/cab drivers), abuse drugs, tear up Olympic villages, and get into public brawls just like in any other sport. But the media doesn't give it as much attention because they never give hockey players as much attention period and because black criminals/white victims usually get more media play than white criminals/black victims.

All sports have people of incredible character, total douchebags, and every notch inbetween. For every Crosby, you have a Kane. For every Durant, you have an Iverson. For every Manning, you have a Roethlisberger.

I agree with (and thoroughly enjoy) Awaz' post 95% of the time, but I don't think hockey players are that different from those in pretty much any other sport. Even if they are, they probably derive entirely from class differences - hockey/tennis/golf/etc. tends to be played by middle/upper class families b/c they are expensive, while sports like basketball, football, soccer, etc. are cheap and accessible to all.

That little passage will probably yield... hmmm... at least 4 pages telling me I'm totally wrong. I want to thank in advance the 1.5 posters that agree with me and respect the views of the 157 who disagree. :)

I agree with SF not only would it be a blow to the nhl but the Atlantic conference as well.We have a high level of competition in our conference and as much as I hate SIS I would also hate to not see him be a part of that.

I'm going over on the 1.5 that agree. I agree with most outside of the amount of incidents that happen. You made a good point that kind of contradicted what was mentioned about the same people are everywhere.

Let's compare the NHL to the NBA. As mentioned, the financial tier that the majority of players come from are fairly different. Both have their classy and classless, but the amounts of each are different. I bet you're already thinking about which one has which without me even specifying. I believe a persons/players background forges who they become. This isn't just about financial status, it's about the environment in which they grow up. Things like unregistered gun charges would favor one side, yet things like domestic violence would be a little more balanced.

Well, true, but to say there will never be a better player, would be farfetched. He is not the GOAT, therefore there can always be a better player. But he is damn good.

In that case, he is a whiny little injury prone douchebag who pisses me off and looks like a platypus.

He cries a lot too!!!!
:rolleyes2:

;)

You know a player is on a whole other level when he can illicit this type of trolling.

Like him, hate him, admire him, or despise him....

He was the BEST player on NHL ice at the time of his injury.

i think thats kinda crazy to say too to be honest.. especially with the smaller guys (gerbe, ennis, gionta, briere, etc.) that are showing that it can be done..

i absolutely think there will be other players like crosby in the future.. never is a long ass time.. there will probably be someone better and more annoying

I think that when we look back on the post-lockout era, we'll look at Crosby and Ovechkin like we do for Gretzky and Lemieux. They aren't the same players, but we'll look at them as (arguably) the best in the league.

I'm not sold on the GOATs being Gretzky, Lemieux and Orr. I just think of them as the best of their eras. They're the players that hit the ground running, consistently dominated, and every team had to gameplan for. The stats are always going to be skewed by the era in which they played. For example, if Ovechkin puts up a 200 point season, to me that's better than either time Gretzky hit the mark. To many others, they'll say "that was great, but Gretzky has the record."

alright lunch was good, leftover spaghetti from last night, if anyone cared..

first i'll agree 100% that hockey tends to be played by middle/upper class families, which makes a big difference, no doubt.. that being said, i think it absolutely makes a difference in the amount of trouble that hockey players get in.. and i disagree 100% that the media's lack of hockey coverage hides there image, at least from fans like us.. we're on here everyday, searching high and low for hockey coverage.. if a player gets in trouble, someone on here is going to know about it, and then we will all know about it.. i highly doubt there are many character flaws that we dont hear about, i.e. dui's, drunk in publics, physical altercations, etc.. i mean really, if patrick kane punching a cabbie makes espn, then i'm sure we (SportsHoopla) would hear if darrol powe spit on a golf course..

the media is too powerful and its too easy to call attention to character flaws for anyone in the entertainment industry to get away with anything, as long as there are avid fans like us searching under rock and tree for something related to hockey

and even if a few slip through the cracks, it'd be tiny things, compared to hitting people while driving drunk (nfl), brandishing a fire arm in the locker room and being wanted for murder a couple years later (nba), dogfighting (nfl), accidental discharge of an illegal firearm in a public place (nfl), multiple drug offenses a week (nba and nfl).. its just ridiculous and out of hand in other sports.. some problems are to be expected, there are bad apples in every bunch, but its really starting to become more of a trend than a rare occurence in other sports
