I can't think of any team with the ability to block the Giants that would have the desire to do so. Being two games back might be a blessing in disguise. Of course, nabbing Ramon Hernandez wouldn't solve all of the Giants' problems, but he would certainly be a marked improvement. Between blocking the D-backs and Phillies from getting Bell and (possibly) getting Hernandez, Sabean can chalk this up as a pretty good August. Beyond getting a solid lead-off hitter (which is only debatable as to whether that is open to him), I don't know what else he could do.

I'm no expert on the details of the rules around this. But at the risk of sounding pantshattacious, MLBTradeRumors is not high on our chances of signing either Bell or Hernandez:
Waiver Rumors: Bell, White Sox, Reds, Wright

The waiver wire is heating up with one week remaining for teams to trade for postseason reinforcements. Here’s a refresher on how August trades work and here are the latest rumors...
It appears unlikely that the Giants, who won the claim on Heath Bell, will complete a trade for the reliever, Jon Heyman of SI.com reports (on Twitter).
Though the Padres would find if difficult to accept a weak offer for Bell, it might beat the alternative of keeping him and potentially paying him big money in 2012, Ken Rosenthal writes at FOX Sports.
The Giants are a fit for the recently waived Ramon Hernandez, but the catcher will likely be a Type A free agent so a different team could claim him for draft picks, ESPN.com's Buster Olney notes (on Twitter).

I don't expect us to be able to pick up Bell. I really don't like the concept of trading away Wheeler, Neal, and Brown/Surkamp all in one season.
I would not trade Brown OR Surkamp for Bell.
However, Hembree + Joseph I think has a decent shot of getting it done. The Giants willingness to be serious players in the draft over the last few years (and the Pads complete bust-i-tude in the draft) tells me that the Giants would be willing to go this steep, but that it would likely not need to be at this level.
I would hate to trade either of them as well; then again I have a tendency to overvalue our prospects and

Fixed it for ya...
Do you think the Giants could have gotten Pence/Bourn/Barmes/Keppinger/Quintero for Wheeler/Brown/Hembree/Surkamp/Peguero/Neal/Joseph/Sosa/Stoffel? Obviously, there would be some roster spot issues. Hindsight being 20/20, would you make that trade?
And what if Pence got hurt like tron, and Bourn went on the DL like torres ect...
Its easy to play the what if game, but at some point we just have to say enough is enough. We cant just keep trying to slap bandaids on our line up and hope for the best.
