I can see why he said it. He plays a different style so because of that he would have stopped it. He did say it in a way that the media thought was "dissing" Thomas, but in reality it wasn't a big deal at all.

Given the entire quote, I agree with the SportsHoopla masses. No big deal. It was a comment in the contrast in styles, not the contrast in talents. I believe it was an acknowledgement of Thomas's talent within his style versus Luongo's talent within his style. They're both very good at what they do, but what they do is different, and inherently some saves are tougher or easier for one goalie than for the other.

It's actually really interesting to me, because we talk often about "routine saves" when talking about hockey. Luongo did something here in pointing out that routine means different things for different guys. I like getting players' perspectives on things like this. For one thing, it heightens my own understanding of the game. For another, it takes us closer to what goes into players' decision-making and what they see on the ice.

was mentioned in the quotes thread, but seems apropos here as well:

Luongo said Thomas talk just style comparison BUT added: “I’ve been pumping his tires all series ... haven’t heard 1 nice thing he had to say about me"

I liked it. But, I too am someone who isn't afraid to speak their mind. The only thing I didn't like was that Lu seems to think Timmy should say something nice about him. Go hang out with puck bunnies if thats what you want, Robbie, they'll pump you up all day long.
This is a reason why I watch playoff post game pressers and not during the regular season so much. People will say anything to get an advantage. (just like how they will DO anything to get an advantage in the games) Otherwise all you'd get is gems like, "We need to skate a full 60 minutes, eh. Blah blah blah..."

Good thing I quit a couple leagues short of the NHL, because my first press conference during the Stanley Cup final would of went like this...

"The first person to come near the puck is getting his fucking head taken off. I want the Cup. Period."

...and I bet there are players on both sides thinking that same thing.

whatever floats the boat for more hatred. really its ill advised words but not that bad. he was asked he answered truthfully. boston fans fucking despise and hate the canucks and luongo and think hes a total sieve that has 2 shut outs in the stanley cup final, everyone hammers him every fucking day from every side of both cities medias. he answers a questions very basic question and answers pretty simply and now he is the most arrogant mother fucker on teh planet.

if this is the only comment that gets the bruins going emotionally maybe they dont deserve to be in the stanley cup final at all.

everyone is way to sensitive. Jeff I found this site for you.

I think he was defending his comments when he said that Thomas hadn't said anything good about him. Kind of like "Media, back off. I was just making a statement, it's not like I haven't been complimenting him all series, or like he's been complementing me or anything." I guess this is just media taking things over the top...but hey, it's the Finals...it's gonna happen.

watching NHL on the fly and the non hockey commentator went off on Luongo for 2 minutes. he was really upset at it. while Craig Button who was a GM in the NHL simply said it is overblown. its 50/50 on the hockey front on how bad those comments really were. I just dont think they were that bad.

and pretty much every "expert" in TV and radio all agree that its about style. Thomas over commits on so many shots. he stops 98% of them but it has cost him and the bruins. that being said its not like Luongo came out and said.

"Hes the most overrated goalie in the history of the Stanley Cup Final and Im not sure why he is even in my league"

that is what Bruins fans are seeing in Robertos Comments as far as I can tell from the venom against him.

I didn't even read them... I believe the Bruins have been going emotionally for a while now. Two gigantic blowouts prove that. your team has won three extremely closely contested games. And also has shown that it is one of the dirtiest teams in the league... Perhaps a team like that shouldn't deserve to be in the Stanley Cup Finals?

then almost 99% of the teams in the Stanley Cup Finals from 1970 to 1985 should never have been in it as well :)
