I hate myself for saying this, but I hope they don't fuck up this book.

I know, I know... Spielberg.

Sucks I'm going to be out of town opening weekend.
I agree, but I don't have high hopes. I just have a bad feeling about it.

I should also give the book another read at some point. Maybe after seeing the movie.

I'll probably listen to the audio book again before the movie comes out... though I'm sure it'll fuck up how I envision certain characters with the Will Wheaton act he puts on a few of them.

I have never listened to an audiobook read by Wheaton. I think he does John Scalzi's Red Shirts and I have been wanting to listen to that.

Is Wheaton an acquired taste when it comes to audiobooks?

I'd say he's an acquired taste in general, but the voice of Halliday seemed off in the trailer the first time I heard it compared to what was in my head from listening to the book.

I thought the trailer looked good. I'll definitely rent it when it comes out.

Could be just a really bad trailer, but it looks way too CGI-fest to have any of the nerd-life charm of the book.

90% of the story takes place in a CGI world in the book. What exactly do people expect?

I honestly don't get the trepidation about this film. Steven Spielberg doing a Sci-Fi film chock full of 80s references? Yes please.

The surprise screening for this film was at SXSW and it got monster reviews.

BTW, I don't get why people thought the book was that amazing. It was nostalgic and fun but the writing was not great.

I was not a fan of his second book (Armada), so you might be right. I might have liked Ready Player One because of the nostalgia of it.

I saw that. It made me happy to see that people were liking it.

I did not like seeing that it is a 2 hr 20 minute flick

It's not that I expected them to NOT use CGI, but at its core, it's still a simple story about the plucky protagonists. - in the trailer I saw, you couldn't even really tell who the characters WERE. Hey, hope I'm wrong. Spielberg CAN do sympathetic characters (see: ET), but I didn't see it in the first trailer.

"Dreamer" trailer:

That trailer was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better than the rest.

They'd be better off with a trailer that sets up the whole movie like the opening of the book where Halladay defines the contest in his opening video.

A big part of it is people can see that very much being our future state in some form.

The book was FAR TOO dystopic.

Unless you agree with its premise that global warming is going to cause a massive energy crisis in the next 20 years. Then maybe it is spot on.

Just got back from a pre-screening of the movie and honestly, it’s just meh. It looks really cool and I had the luxury of seeing it in IMAX 3D so it was enhanced which was nice since it was a free screening. However, there was either too much going on on screen to focus a lot of times or it was just references for the sake of references(my buddy I was with said the book is like that too but that doesn’t mean it should automatically get a pass). One of the unwritten rules in cinema is don’t mention a better movie in the middle of your shitty one(it wasn’t that bad but every time I saw something cool I wished I was watching that movie and it took me out of this one) and there were just too many times where I either didn’t care about what was going on on screen or I was just flat out bored.

It was an ok movie, I probably won’t see it again but I didn’t feel like my time was wasted so I’d probably give it about a 5/10.
