Im shocked how bad the run game was but I think it was more of GB playing the run. Their goal was to stop the Run but forgot that Kap can also throw the ball.

yep, Kaep will be judged by his passing ability first and foremost. this is same for all NFL QB's, cause if you can't pass..........doesn't matter how athletic you are.

Kaep obviously threw well today, but huge credit to the O-line for extra outstanding pass protection. only one whiff by Iupati that comes to mind now.

I don't think we are a read option team. We are a team that has the ability to run the read option if the game-plan and flow indicates we should.

This is the key. Last year, with Kaep at QB, we ran read option less than 6 times per game. It isn't like we have Eric Crouch and the 90s Cornhuskers.

It's a play (or series of plays) we run.

You might as well call us a "TE down the seam" team.

I think the Niners are getting away from their identity. Kap can throw from the pocket and doesn't need gimmicks. This game proves it. They need to get back to running from under center. This team is designed for a strong run game. Gore never looked comfortable and never got into a rhythm. Too much movement and BS before the snap leads to a short playclock and wasted timeouts and penalties. Sometimes you just have to line up and play the game.

Yo Man!

I'm with you on that and this is the reason why I didn't like Kap last year. It's obvious he's talented but he has to get Gore into rhythm. I think the biggest problem, and you could see it in Gore's body language, is that Kap would never check down even when there wasn't a defender within a 10 yard vicinity.

I hope it's something he corrects through game tape.

I don't want to dismiss the Packers D Line because they did have a great game and they were highly motivated but I think they were putting almost everything into stopping the run and read option hence the 400+ yards passing.

Which wasn't actually a bad move on their part because if they get dominated by the running game they have little chance at winning. But if you make it all about passing the odds of winning go up which is what we saw today.

I just don't think our offensive line is particularly good at run blocking but GB has three D linemen that are at least 320 and are hard to move. Additionally, I think Hunter has surpassed Gore as the teams best RB.

I would still take Gore on the inside but I would take Hunter on the outside.

I think one issue is we should've given the ball more to Hunter on the outside in this game and not so much running into the wall of mass GB had plugging the middle.

Yeah, there were a couple plays where he had Gore wide open and ended up throwing it away or running out of bounds. I like that he is always looking downfield, but sometimes you have to check it down and get some positive yards. Could have kept some drives alive.

Dub,

With regard to the Chiefs game, were they running a 3-4 today, or was it the regular base 4-3? How was Eric Berry? DJ? Sean Smith?

They run a base 3-4 defense, their defense looks really impressive honestly but they were playing against the Jags.

Eric Berry was not involved in as many plays as he usually is for several reason. The first is that the DL and LBs played so well that running plays rarely made it past that level. The second is that the Jags pass game was non-existent and Gabbert was sacked every time he dropped back. There just weren't a ton of plays to be made. That isn't saying that he didn't make plays as he was involved in several tackles, it just wasn't it usual game where he takes over though.

DJ had his usual game, all over the field making tackles.

Sean Smith was very very impressive, his press coverage is some of the best that I've seen in a while. They tried to throw on him a couple times and he nearly picked those passes. I'm still pissed that we passed on him.

How much of the success through the air was due to GB emphasizing defending the read option?

exactly. they prepared all offseason. dipshit clay mathews knew we were running the read options everytime and blew up a few plays.

What are you talking about. :L We have THE BEST offensive line in the league, especially at run locking. Run blocking is what Iupati, Goodwin, Boone and Davis are especially good at. If anything, its their collective pass blocking that is their weakness (even though they were really good at that yesterday as well - hence the best offensive line in the league).

after yesterday's pass protect performance, I can believe it now. we won't run at will nor pass protect well EVERY game, but I can believe it now.

credit to GB's D-line, and their commitment to stop the run.

So I saw a read option play by Philly that I 100% want to steal.

It was a typical read-option with the hand-off/keep option, but the TE lined up at the slot on the backside (away from the direction the RB went) and ran a seam route. Philly ended up throwing to the TE for about a 12 or 15 yard gain. How badass would VD be running a seam route when the safeties and LB are reading run?

I like it!

The Niners' offense is going to give DCs fits this season. It's extremely unpredictable.
