Re-visiting the Bowman issue

So since most people think he's as good as gone when he hits FA (since he's gonna get like 10 million a year), what if the Niners moved Ahmad Brooks inside and went after an OLB in the next couple of offseasons?

Brooks doesnt have that sideline to sideline speed as willis or bowman. Ill pass

He'd probably want to shed a few if he moved inside. I think he could do it. He played ILB at Viginia and in Cinci'.

Well, I don't think the issue is which one to keep. I think Bowman is gone regardless. 20 million a season is too much money to pay a couple of ILBs.

that is quite correct... but they're not any ILBs.... they're our Tornados...

but obviously we can't put that much money in the middle....

but who knows if its possible, i mean, Bowman, Aldon and Goldson are looking to get paid big. Goldson is likely gone, Aldon isn't up for awhile. Perhaps by the time he's up for a new contract, Justin Smith would be retired or at a discount thus making it easier to sign aldon and bowman... Willis hit isn't big after a certain year IIRC.

You also can't let an asset like Bowman just walk. If you don't want to tie up money in him then at least try a trade for some value in return.

I think you're right. I'd try to trade him in the offseason regardless of what happens in the postseason.

Well, there's Culliver, Davis & Iupati eventually (Iupati is a must-keep guy), I'd like to keep Sopoaga, Tarrell Brown's contract is up the same time Bowman's is, and Aldon is eventually going to get a monster contract.

Also, the if the Niners ever find a franchise QB, they'll have to sign a 100 Million + contract for him.

Culliver and Davis won't get huge contracts. Neither will Sopoaga or Tarell Brown.

I think you're making something out of nothing. It should not be a problem to sign most of these guys including a franchise QB if we ever find one.

I think Bowman might give the Niners a discount. He certainly seems to love playing beside Willis. I didn't like the pick when it was made but he has really been impressive the last season and a half.

I wish I liked more inside guys this year than I do. Maybe that'll change as I watch more but I haven't really gone gaga over any ILB for the 49ers yet. Usually it's easier to project an inside guy than to peg an OLB, but this year that might be more difficult to do.

I'd like to see them keep Brooks outside and try to find another ILB in the draft if Bowman is not going to be around long-term. Then continue to look for at least one more situational guy.

I'm really hoping Cam Johnson can fill one of those spots. I was gaga over him this year. He was one of my favorite late round picks by the 49ers (since 1998). I even liked Darius Fleming a bit but his future is cloudy now with the ACL tear.

That may be true, but it might also mean the Niners couldn't land a FA in a position of greater need. Justin Smith's contract is up that offseason too, and he's getting up there in age.

I'm just not sure it'd be a great idea to give him 10+ million for 5-6 years.

If Bowman leaves, I think Grant would be better to replace him over Brooks. He plays pretty well whenever he gets in the games. He coverage needs a little work though.

Bowman would more than likely get a franchise tag for 1 or 2 years if the 49ers can't work something out long-term with him. I agree that Culliver, Davis, Brown, and Sopoaga won't break the bank during FA. Although of those 4, I think Davis is likely to draw the most attention from a division rival who will drive his price up higher than he deserves.

No way should we move Brooks to ILB. Either we re-sign Bowman or move on with either Grant or someone else.
