McCourty's a fine CB. He's just also an elite FS. He leads the league in passes defensed + interceptions over the last 3 years, doesn't he?

They're getting production out of that pick. Lots of it.

You better hope he's the 2010 version and not the 2011 one if they use him at corner.

Pro Football Focus:
New England Patriots: Cornerback Devin McCourty had a great rookie year in 2010, but receivers performed a lot better against him in 2011. In 2011, quarterbacks had a rating of 104.7 when throwing McCourty’s way.

thanks for nothing Glass-IR. this is so annoying cuz we didnt look for an outside corner in the draft cuz we were hoping ras-i was going to contribute, now we only got two outside corners. talib and dennard are both very good so we are fine but if one gets injured we are screwed. arrington, cole, ryan wont cut it outside. we needed ras-i for insurance and to be in the mix a bit and now we dont got that. one injury to talib and dennard could take a great defense to middle of the pack. we got to bring in an outside corner but where and who.

This defense is middle of the pack, was not going to be great do to the secondary already.

BB can draft o-line and d-line, LB's and RB. Sucks at WR, CB, and S. Perfect example was last yr. I am sure I will get killed for this.....Don't get me wrong, I like the Jones and Hightower picks. However, I think a better draft would have been Jones and Harrison. Harrison would have taken care of are SS problem. I am not sure how people felt about Harrison on these boards, but the fools on ESPN said he would never make it in the NFL...well I think we know that is not true. SO we take Jones and Harrison in the 1st, and then take Bobby Wagnor in the 2nd. I think this team would be much better now if this happened. Instead we reach on Wilson and Ebner....This yr draft was it for me...Ryan and Harmon...give me a fucking break! I do not care if they run an NFL style program. Last time I check the Big East was not the NFL.....This time next yr, we will, again be looking at a shitty draft and thinking about who we should have gotten in 2013

bb dont realize we a few talented freaks away from being godlike as a team. i would trade up every draft and get an absolute stud, instead of trading back and taking scrubs who wont make the team. imagine trading mallett to arizona early on for larry fitz right about now? or a first rounder.

If we could get a decent first rounder for Mallett (or absolutely Fitzgerald) I believe we would. Keep in mind that the amount of your talent on the team and the reason that this team is in such great shape is because Belichick built it to be. He did so while averaging 12-4 and being a legitimate Super Bowl contender every single year. You can highlight all the mistakes you want, but the fact is not many can challenge Belichick on either just coaching or just the job he has done as a GM. When you put the two together he is in my opinion the best option in the league.

He was never elite or shutdown. He got "exposed" for two reasons. First, the safety play was atrocious and not many can stick with a teams' number one with no help at all. Second, a lot of plays he was the closest to the ball simply because other people were beat bad and he reacts very well to to ball.

you could agrue his recent drafts are whats keeping this team from being godlike as well. weve always been good but havent been able to get over that hump and win the sb, maybe its cuz he keeps trading down and drafting scrubs. shoot last time we really got back to being great was when he traded picks for elite talent in moss and welker. we got some studs trading up for jones and hightower. bb needs to do that more often cuz we are so close. instead hes traded back many times and drafted busts, sure he lands a gronk and vollmer at times but there been way more misses. he passed on dez bryant. he drafted lower teir rbs like ridley and vereen who arent exactly adrian peterson when we needed a back badly. why not move up for a trent richardson? he may have been out of reach but you know what i mean. trading back for ryan, harmon..., shoot the wrs better work out. hes lucky he found kenbrell thomkins or this year may have been pretty rough.

You're acting like he has had high first rounders and drafted bums. Elite guys don't fall to the end of the first round. There are questions after the top 5 or so picks. Without him our franchise would still be fighting to be better than mediocre.

pats have had multiple picks in drafts you can trade up instead of seing how many second and third rounders you can acumilate. he also lost a first rounder from spygate due to him and instead of drafting Flowers for cb at the bottom of the first he gets wheatley at the bottom of the second who aint even on the team anymore. be aggressive in the draft and trade up and get elite talent we may have had six sb's by now. when you are a team as good as the pats it doesnt make sense to trade down and draft a ton of guys that wont make the team.

You do not know better than Belichick. I guarantee that. His strategy has yielded unmatched results.

Also, where do you think the multiple picks came from? Belichick regularly moves both up and down, and you can't just consistently move up like you seem to want.

we got first rounders for bledsoe, branch, seymour, and the first pick in the second round for cassel off the top of my head. he picks up extra lower picks by trading down or into next year when he could trade up instead. when the last time bb traded a future pick to move up? nearly never, i see other teams do it all the time.

i wouldnt take any coach over bb thats for sure but to draft yea theres a few, ozzie newsome from baltimore for example.

Yeah, I heard you before but none of it makes him a better cornerback than safety, and since he was drafted to be a cornerback, he's still a first round bust at that position.

Maybe you'll recall what Mayock said about McCourty on TV when he was drafted:

"Possibly the best STs player in the draft, will compete for time in the nickle and dime package, a little tight in his turns"

They tried him at cornerback and had to move him to safety...no matter how you try to spin it.

If Ryan can't play, Dennard may be the only cornerback Belichick has hit on in the draft; and that's only because his value was too great to pass on in the 7th round. In essence...The blind cornerback-drafting-squirrel found a nut because it fell into his lap. Keep in mind that Dennard may still fail as a long term solution.

They moved him to safety because they had depth at corner and a desperate need at safety, not because he sucked. Also, the idea that any player but maybe a QB gets drafted solely to play one position and not to do whatever he fits best at is silly. He was drafted to play football for the Patriots. He is doing a very good job so far playing football for the Patriots. That's all that matters.

The moved him because he started to suck at CB and there were no indications he was going to improve. Devin can play CB in a pinch but is a better FS.

He was their best CB that year before they acquired Talib (Dennard came on later in the season). Best of a bad lot, sure, but he was playing well. They moved him because FS was a complete black hole of incompetence and they suddenly had CB depth.

There is not a lot of doubt that some of these draft picks have sucked, but I really think we also need to look at our D-Coordinator and Secondaries coaches. Hell when the Jets fire Rex make him an offer as D-Coord.

And put in his contract he can either kiss the rings once, or bow to them every day!!!

They'll still need secondary coaches...

I wouldn't mind a shakeup among the defensive coaching staff. This year is make-or-break for them, as far as I'm concerned. They went into a rebuilding program a few years ago, ok. Well, you've had a bunch of drafts to rebuild. You've got your guys in place. There can't be any excuses, now - the defense has to be good this year or its time to make a change in the coaching staff on that side of the ball.
