Depending on Free Agency is not the answer. How do you know if we could sign the guy? You have to compete with other teams. Too many what if's.

Reaching for players isn't the answer. Drafting for need and being desperate isn't the answer.

Where a guy played in College does not always mean he is locked into that spot in the NFL though. How many corners have we seen converted to safety. Centers and Tackles moved to guard.

I think the coaches thought they could convert Thomas to a FS. Going in the report was that Thomas and Rambo would be competing to start at FS. Apparently Rambo won the job so far. And in our system, you almost have to play both in either case.

Glad we got them both. We had zero depth at the safety position last year.

Yeah, you have to determine what a player does well and what they don't. Thomas isn't a center field player. He plays better closer to the line of scrimmage.

Shark, I understand where you are coming from, but any draft pick after the first pick of the draft has an element of luck in it. As for Rambo in the sixth, of course there was a bit of luck that he was still available, but it was also some great scouting and great FO work in developing our draft board as well as speculating on the other 31 team's draft boards. Once the draft is over and the guys suit up, who cares where they were drafted? If we can get a starter from a late round pick, great. I still don't understand the issue you keep raising, dean.

All we really have right now is forecast and hope. Two weeks into training camp no rookie is a star. Lets hope all the draft picks are hits although we know that is not likely.

Dean, I've sided with you on some issues in the past but I think this is a dead one.
Honestly, it was crazy from the outside looking in to pass on a need at S in the early rounds BUT to land Brandon Jenkins in the 5th...a projected 2nd rounder...who may get to contribute early this year....that's unbelievable.

Really the only pick that is slightly uncomfortable is Amerson. We don't know if Jekyll or Hyde will show up.
And we still got Thomas and Rambo who could become our starting FS/SS in the future.

Warpath is also right, if we failed in the draft to secure a S, we would have addressed that in FA.
However one of the options...Corey Lynch has surprisingly not drawn interest from any team, unless I missed something

Really pumped about Jenkins. Is their any chance he plays any DE?

He's too small for DE in a 3-4 but I'm sure they'll get him on the field in obvious passing situations. Can imagine he and Rak on the outside with Kerrigan rushing up the middle. They have some weapons in the pass rush now to toy around with different sets.

Yes Jenkins was a solid pick. I was just pointing out that we got lucky with Rambo. Amerson should start for us this year b/c of the avg. competition. I thought you didn't like the Reed pick Skinemall? Niles Paul is having a solid camp at TE.

You come off as whiny in the process as if the Redskins did something wrong. That's all. We got him in the 6th round and you're making arguments after the fact that they should have taken him in the 3rd round based on need. It's actually becoming comical.

Whiny? My argument was it was luck that Rambo was there. I cant believe you guys wont admit that. Plus I am curious to know if the Redskins knew if Thomas was a true FS or not when they drafted him. There is no way of knowing that so its moot. I remember Mike Mayock saying that Thomas was the best ball hawking FS in this draft. Wow was he wrong. lol.

You didn't know anything about Thomas, so you assume that the Redskins didn't? We had a need at both safety positions.

You say luck, I call it being rewarded for being patient. It's no coincidence that the good teams often get lucky. Requires patience. And it requires good planning. We were fortunate that Rambo slid in a deep draft class at his position. Nobody said we weren't.

There was a greater need at the FS position. Merri and Doug are still reliable at SS. But there is no one at the FS position on the current roster. This is why Rambo is running with the first team. He has no competition to speak of. Even if Rambo is avg he wins the job by default b/c there is no one else.

Tanard jackson is the only competition he has, and that guys not even practicing at the time.

Yeah, but good teams don't draft based on need. Which is why I have to continually bring up the fact that they had interviewed several vets at FS before the draft in the event that they didn't draft a capable one.

Even if Rambo is average, what we had last year was well below average. Madieu Williams was bottom of the barrel.

I agree Wiliams stunk. That is why an upgrade at the FS position was so important. I would rather have Rambo and Thomas than a vet in FA.

Well, that's how it worked out. But my point all along is that the draft is for the future, not immediate needs. So the Redskins were wise to have many fires burning, including the possibility of free agent veterans. So that they could follow the best player available model.

It worked out for them. Draft couldn't have gone much better IMO.
