He doesn't really have any competition. I thought at draft time that Thomas was a FS. Then I find out that he is a SS. It makes you wonder why the Redskins waited until the 6th round to address our biggest defensive need.

If we didn't get Rambo what would happen at FS? Would Thomas be forced in that role? Would it be Dougherty? Very lucky that Rambo was there. Me personally, I would of taken Rambo in the 3rd round if I knew he was a true FS and Thomas was a SS.

They would have signed a free agent if they hadn't found someone in the draft.

The Redskins defense is designed so that the safeties are interchangeable. If Rambo can continue at the level we hear he has been playing at and Meriwether is healthy I would look for them to be the starting safeties. My guess is Reed Doughty would be the first safety off the bench. If you got a starting safety with the 6th pick instead of the 3rd pick then management drafted a starting player who receives a lower salary. That benefits the organization.

I realize its benefits the organization but we took a HUGE risk on waiting to draft this guy. Who is out there in FA that can come in and start for us? Why would you want Doughty to start for us? He is just a role and special teams player. I think Rambo will do well for us.

They interviewed a couple FS free agents right before the draft. Both of which started for their previous teams. No smart team ever leaves themselves only one avenue to fill a position.

Either way, this was an incredibly deep draft at safety and the Redskins played it smart. They didn't reach for players. And a guy who many teams were concerned about character with, fell in our laps.

If they hadn't drafted Rambo, or two safeties in the draft, they would have signed a free agent. They had contingency plans.

You would have drafted him in the 3rd, the Redskins drafted him in the 6th because they were patient in a draft that was deep at safety.

Being patient and rewarded for that patience is better than being desperate.

Why are we so sure that it was a gamble, or risky? How do we not know that it was just plain old good scouting as well as intelligence gathering on other teams by our scouting dept?

Dean, you've been on this rant since the draft. What exactly is the point you are trying to make, cause for the life of me I can't figure it out? It seems to me that you aren't happy because we paid too little for Rambo. Is that your argument? We should have paid more?

It would seem that dean doesn't want to give Shanahan and Allen any credit. Good news last season is they were lucky drafted Alfred Morris last season in the 6th round. Shanahan has been so lucky he drafted Terrell Davis in the the 6th round years ago.

You know the old saying, it's better to be lucky than good.

exactly my point sportster 72. My point is that Rambo makes this whole draft. Although, Amerson could surprise.

Getting Rambo in the 6th round made me just smile from ear to ear. I knew he'd be a Redskin, but not that late in the rounds. Something tells me that he is going to be the best player out of this draft. He can ball. My only knock on him--outside of the suspensions--he needs to learn how to wrap up, instead of throwing his body around.

His off field troubles had a lot to do with him dropping in the draft. Plus, he is not a sure tackler. If he improves his tackling and keeps his nose clean we have a stud at FS for the next 7-10 years.

Thing is, it wasn't just luck. Some of our fan base doesn't seem to know what it feels like to have a competent front office. Teams that are patient are rewarded this way quite frequently. Shanahan took advantage of a draft that was deep in a position of need. Could have easily reached for players to fill needs, but they didn't.

exactly ! our scouting dept deserves kudos for getting him in round 6 . not some panic driven hogwash that has been proven in action to be hogwash

the skins waited on rambo and they got him plus they added a few possible difference makers to boot

that is playing the draft to a "T" not some dumb luck and stumbling into a pick

look you draft the best player at a postion of need first if value isnt there you go with the BPA . the skins did that and they look to be rewarded

Yeah! Shanny just played the board, as he did in 2011 and 2012. For example, in 2011, we clearly needed a QB. Blaine Gabbert was there for the taking. Instead, he traded out and got Ryan Kerrigan instead. Not to mention, no QB was drafted. I wonder was because he had his eye on one, but didn't want to reach for players, such as Gabbert, Locker, and Ponder. Well, in 2012, he got his man in RGIII. He knew deep inside that he needed a backup because he obviously didn't trust either Grossman or John Beck. He just let the draft go. Then, in the 4th round, he saw that Kirk Cousins was there for the taking. He jumped on the opportunity. This draft was the same way. The minute you go into the draft with the notion of filling needs, that when you get burned.
