Was just announced that Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn has passed away at the age of 54. I was only able to see the final years of his career but always appreciated how great he was as a hitter.

-A career .338 batting average, eight batting titles. 19 consecutive seasons with a BA over .300, seven seasons with a BA over .350

Wow.

I live in SD, and expect this to dominate much of the media for the next few days and be a huge topic of discussion at the office today.

He seemed to be a good dude and a real asset to the game. He will be missed.

My roommates Dad is very sad to hear this. He is a Cubs fan, but has lived in SD. Says the only reason he ever went to any Pads games was for the Cubbies, or to watch Tony Gwynn. He was an icon in SD.

Tony Gwynn was always one of my favorite players. I remember the first time I heard of the 5.5 hole it was when Gwynn was hitting. He owned that 5.5 hole. His lifetime average blows me away and I respected the fact that he stayed in SD when he could of left for a lot more money. Krukow talked about Gwynn's smile and laugh and it was one of the best around. He was a man who loved and respected the game of baseball and we are all better off for being able to see him play. I never heard a bad word ever said about Tony Gwynn.

They should rename the 5.5 spot in the infield after Gwynn. My sister passed away of the same thing as Gwynn at 28 yrs old. A terrible disease and I hope they find a cure for it as soon as possible. My sister never smoked or drank and it came as a complete shock to our family.

My thoughts and prayers are for Gwynn's family. RIP Tony Gwynn ....one of the greatest of all time.
