Not trying to be a party pooper here. I keep hearing about how our new scheme will be simplified and easier for the players to grasp and thus execute. So would that make things easier for the opposition to defend? Any easier than it was the past few years? If that's possible.

I know that T.O's offense ran something that was called simple in design but by the words of other coaches it was in fact not easy to defend. However those days were many moons ago.

T.O.'s offenses were disciplined. They played good fundamental football.

Week after week you heard nothing but the same thing from opposing teams and fans. "We'll just stack the line of scrimmage with 9 players and stuff the option". It didn't matter because the offense executed the play without shooting themselves in the foot.

It was basic Power I option football with some deviation. They lulled you to sleep with 3 yds, 4 yds and then pulled the fullback trap or hit the tight end for a big gainer. T.O. was also good at using misdirection against fast defenses.

Many offensive players from those days will tell you they looked forward to gameday because it was physically easier than practice.

so it has just as much to do with coaching than anything else?

Last year I could easily see how a defense could just stand there and wait for the inevitable QB draw 3 out of 4 plays straight. Back then at least it was an option play with dedicated blockers out there.

Discipline makes all the difference. A few years back there was a HS team in NW Iowa that only had around 10 plays offensively but crushed opposition with assignment blocking

We need better players. Discipline is great, but there's a reason we had problems with Texas, Oklahoma and Texas aTm. They have better players. It will be the same story against Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State. We need to be Top 10 in recruiting year in and year out. Until then, expect more games like the Holiday Bowl in the future.

I'm thinking it's a mix of the 2, coaching first, then the talent second.

After sitting through alot of games watching plays get called late and the resulting delay of game penalties, I doubt very much the new scheme could be worse. How is the QB supposed to audible when he barely has time to get the count off and receive the snap? The offense was supposed to be "multiple" but turned out to be a bad mashup of spread and "sling it around" WCO that had no real identity. What I expect the new look to be is a no huddle spread heavy on hot route audibles, with zone read and the wildcat thrown in.

Now, for entertainment puposes only, I submit the following as the "old" Nebraska mashup. Keep in mind I've nothing against any former coaches, players etc. etc.

And this is the awesomeness I expect from Becks new and improved Nebraska "multiple" mashup.

I really hope that we don't revert back to just a 1 dimensional option team, and I do understand that it was effective in the past.
