Disappointing Dalton

It’s flown surprisingly under the radar, but Andy Dalton (-1.9) hadn’t had the kind of season to scare many opposition defenses. Reliant more on his receivers making plays and a stellar pass blocking offensive line, the sophomore quarterback brought his problems into this game and left you with no doubt as to what they are.

He doesn’t know what to do when pressure gets in his face.

The Bengals hid this well during the regular season. He faced pressure on only 25.7% of plays — fourth-lowest of 38 qualifying quarterbacks — within an offense that saw him get rid of the ball in 2.5 seconds or under on 60.8% of drop-backs (only Matt Hasselbeck and Chad Henne had a higher percentage). Yet in the playoffs you can’t hide flaws so easily, and with the Texans aggressive defense came pressure on 40% of drop-backs.

He did not respond well.

Here he took two sacks, scrambled twice and completed only 3 of 10 attempts for 11 yards. Or 1.1 yards per attempt. There are more questions than answers with Dalton at this stage of his career, as his second postseason game highlighted.

And to think he was still 3rd in the league with 46 sacks.

Edit: I've gained more respect for Gruden as this sheds even more light on what he really had to work with and what he was able to accomplish.

Those stats really illustrate how inept Dalton is. I love that website.

They're the best at what they do. Unfortunately, you have to pay to get the wealth of their information.

Completely agree with Maualuga, he's awful. He can't cover a fucking slug, much less Owen Daniels. He can't be here next year, move Burfict to the middle.

I've been a Dalton guy but last night was so dissapointing. For a guy that was supposed to be a 'gamer' he chokes big time in the playoffs. Mentally, he seems to be regressing. He's just not seeing it (especially when there is pressure). I'll give him another year, but if he doesn't show significant progression it will be time to move on. In the past 24 hours I've gone from thinking Dalton is 'pretty good' to 'average'.

Maulaluga is brutal. Has been for a while. As much as I think Zim is a great coordinator makes you wonder why he keeps running that oaf out there.

Because he's the captain!

I'd stay here and keep reading this, but I'm going to take a Maulaluga.

I'm going to put some Maulaluga in a bag, put it on my neighbor's door, and light it on fire.

Gresham is their lowest rated tight end of the year.

Please help me so I don't fall out of my chair. I thought he was awesome.

So do a lot of people on this board. Anyone who still says we should have taken him over Bryant is an absolute moron.

The only reason I'm glad we didn't is that we wouldn't have AJ if we took Dez.... And can you imagine Dez with the Cincy police?

But you're right.... Dez was clearly the better pick. Gresham is horrible.

I'm reverting back to my thoughts on draft day. When Dez was there I was screaming at the TV for them to take him. Same with Mallet over Dalton. Dez is clearly a better player than Gresham who isn't a bust but he's not nearly what he should be. The critical easy passes that he drops baffle the mind. Bryant is a stud. Who knows if he could co-exist with AJ or if the Bengals would've drafted him if he would've gone off the deep end. I think you need to have the culture to support a guy like Bryant. The Cowboys did a lot for him. Not sure the Bengals would've done the same and that the result would've been the same.
