Lightning star Steven Stamkos: No pain, no gain - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

I read this article this morning and it really made me question my expectations for the guy. I was merely expecting about 35 goals, maybe 75 points. How quick I was to forget how hot he started last year. I have to say that the article swayed me. If Crosby doesn't play at the start of the season, I think Stamkos may be the favorite (to me) for the Richard at about 55+ goals.

Does anyone else see this happening or expect a different result?

EDIT: In regard to the title typo, I submit my :L

55 goals is tough to score in today's NHL and I think Stamkos will come close, but miss by three. 52 goals and 47 assists for 99 points (which sets the home scorer scrambling to find a secondary assist to bump him up to 100 points).

Don't forget those final game empty-netters. ;)

Not even OV could do it two years ago, but I like the name. Better than that Ovechtrick or whatever it is.

what the hell happened to stamkos down the stretch last year ... they could have rolled out the old "Seen Stamkos" campaign ... was there an injury? I skimmed that story and didnt catch anything about it

Nothing really. He just went cold. At the same time, I chalk the first 20+ games up to just being hot, so it balances out.

Almost as good as a Semin hat trick; A goal, an assist and a stick penalty

I thought that was a David Copperfield trick. Remember when he Semin-tricked the statue of Liberty?

40 goals, and I'm being generous. 6 in 18 in the playoffs, and 7 in the last three months of the season. He needs to learn a new trick, because the players are figuring him out, and Martin St. Louis isn't getting any younger.

To answer the OP, I see him struggling kinda like how OV did last season, its part of the reason I don't think Tampa makes the playoffs...

I would agree if I didn't expect him to grow as a player. Remember that this guy isn't even close to the statistical "prime years" that we usually see in the late 20's. His hockey IQ will go up, but I wouldn't be surprised if your prediction happened.

I think Stamkos will score 51G 44A 95PTS. The guy is lethal on the powerplay & the Lightning will get plenty of chances.

The thing to consider, that I just thought about, would be how their division might have improved. 6 games against Vokoun... on a good team. The Jets will look different too. The Panthers and Canes look the same, but there are some question marks.

I'm sure we all know where I am on the Stamkos, Crosby, Ov debate (which is fun from time to time), so I really get into how these three perform versus what I expect.

Oh, I definitely think he'll be a better player, but it takes a perfect storm to hit it out of the park like he's been doing. He and St. Louis have chemistry, but once that's gone, he may be more talented individually in his late 20s than he is right now, but I don't think the stats will reflect it, because he'll be in a lesser situation.

A parallel would be Selanne in Winnipeg and Selanne in Anaheim. He was a better player in the late 90s, but he wasn't scoring 76, because the situation wasn't as advantageous.

Similar to Alex Mogilny scoring 76 when he was teamed with Pat Lafontaine. They had great chemistry but once Patty had the concussion problems Alex's magic stick went away.
