Hope you don't mind me jumping in here because there is no activity on the Panther's board. You are right we benefit from playing the AFC -S this year but you cannot call the NFC-S a sub par division. Our division Record is 23/14 the only division that beats us is the AFC E by a half a game at 23/13.

Having said that I do think the Skins provide a match up problem for the Panthers if you can stick to your run game. You guys have a penchant for knocking out some long runs and you passing game is coming around nicely. Also I have not seen the stats but I would think you held the Saints offense down better than anybody this year.
Welcome your input and please join in here with your thoughts and team perspective :suds:

Our running game had really been struggling prior to the Saints game. It was a function of quite a few things, young line and some errors in run blocking, TE blocking, RB errors with lanes and cuts etc.

Our hope is to see that running game continue to develop and progress. We do have a good corps with Alf, Matt Jones and Chris Thompson. All of them can do good things if everyone Does Their Job. Course you can say that about most teams, heh.

A few questions for you.

What do you consider the biggest weakness for your team?
How would you attack them for a win?
Is Luke healthy?
How would you grade your pass rush?
What's your thoughts on your running game? We've been gashed in run defense...but have shown some improvement as our guys have been slowly trickling back from injuries and tackling better.

Fair enough & let me start by stating that the NFC-E is pretty bad rt now. Your team is actually the only one in the NFC-S that can take credit by beating teams like the Packers and Seahawks. The other three teams won pretty much only over the AFC-S and NFC-E. Oh well - like I said the whole NFL is pretty bad at this time - sorry didn't mean to make this a slight on your team. Here's to a good game.

Weakness:
Cam's penchant for throwing off his back foot and the ball sailing on him.
While we have a great tight end, our receivers are marginal.
Our D ends corps have suffered some injuries and consequently our pass rush wears out before the game is over.
If I was coaching against them I would hammer the run game, short controlled passes to bring the secondary up then take some shots over the top. I do think we are tough to defend. Cam's decision making is improving greatly and you cant necessarily control his runs with a spy. The dude will take on a line backer and is often clutch when we have to have a 1st down. Contrary to stats his accuracy is improving.
Luke is healthy and he and Thomas Davis are a remarkable duo.
It seems like we have to blitz to get pressure on the QB but our DBs are doing a great job of taking away targets.
Our run game is a game long process. It is usually much more effective in the 4th qtr.

Gotta run but thanks for letting me play and will check in later tonight.
I gotta say you folks have the best team board. Definitely more intelligent and relevant discussions here than any of the others.

It's the offense the Skins ran in 2012 and so many college teams run. The post pass play is what the Skins called "drift" and Griffin hit Garcon on 100 times. The key, playing assignment defense. Don't guess, honor your assignment. If one guy does not honor his assignment then the D is in trouble.

Perhaps someone ripped the Skins defense - especially their LBs - a new one over the last several weeks especially after the way they seemed to violate this principal against the Jets, Pats and Bucs (at least in the 1st half). It is probably pretty tempting for some of these guys to want to stray & make a big play - they need to be kept in check.

A great lesson for these guys might be showing that Brandon Browner play over and over again. That play proves the negative consequences of placing yourself before the team & your designated assignment.

It will be interesting to see if Will Compton's play continues to help the D. I had noted for several weeks before last game that KRob was struggling. Whether due to injury or not I can't answer. Also had problems with TRob not honoring his gap integrity. Again lets see what happens this week.

Newton doesn't put up fancy passing numbers but he is able to break down defenses and because of that is effective.

I think Keenan's play has been mostly a product of his injuries. He can play but not play well enough as a result. Earlier in the season he was having little issue with tackling well. Once he heals up I think we will see a return to form.

Here's a look at the Panthers through the statistics, courtesy of ESPN Stats and Information:

  • Opposing quarterbacks have a 69.1 passer rating, the lowest total by any defense. (Last week’s opponent, the Saints, remains the NFL’s worst team in this category.) Only two quarterbacks, Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers and Seattle’s Russell Wilson, have finished with a rating of 96 or better -- and neither was above 96.7. They’re also the only two who finished with more touchdown passes than interceptions. In fact, the Panthers have intercepted 14 passes and allowed only 11 touchdown throws.

  • The Panthers are tied for sixth with 26 sacks, and their pressure results in a lot of short passes -- they’re second in the NFL in net yards per pass attempt allowed at only 5.94. The Panthers have allowed only eight pass plays for 30 yards or more (sixth-fewest in the NFL).

  • Those eight didn’t just come on catch-and-runs, as six occurred on passes that traveled at least 25 yards. So there are gaps. But this also happens to be an area the Redskins have struggled in this season: Kirk Cousins has completed just three of 16 passes that have traveled 25 yards or more. But know this: Carolina has allowed 13.43 yards per catch to tight ends, second-most in the NFL.

Ricky Jean always seems to have a funny sound bite.

Excerpt

“You can’t let him be Cam Newton, looking like LeBron James on the damn field,” Redskins defensive end Ricky Jean Francois said. “And if he starts getting his groove, he will be dabbing all day.”

Robert Griffin III did for Washington in 2012, Newton provides an already good running game another weapon. And like Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger, Newton's size enables him to withstand hits in the pocket and extend plays for big gains.

It’s not as if Newton can’t be sacked -- opponents have gotten him 18 times this season. But for someone who holds the ball for a while -- his time before pass of 2.61 seconds is eighth-highest in the NFL -- that sack total could be higher.

Also, consider this: Newton averages 1.50 yards after contact, and no other quarterback is above .95. Indianapolis running back Frank Gore, for example, averages 1.51 after contact.

“It might be a tie between him and Big Ben as to who's the hardest to get down to the ground,” Jean Francois said of Newton. “He’s athletic. It will take a lot for him to fall. Ain’t be no arm-tackles to take this dude. You have to put your body on him to make him fall. And make sure you wrap his feet up. He can get out of there. He’s strong enough to do it.

“If everyone tries to get big hits against this dude, he can spin off, put his hand on the ground and bounce back up and continue to play.”

Newton’s running ability makes it difficult in the red zone, too. He’s carried the ball 18 times inside the 20-yard line with six touchdowns, and he has carried the ball at least twice in the red zone in every game but two.

Newton’s passing numbers won’t pop off the page — he’s 21st in the league in passing yards (2,037) and quarterback rating (84.8) and 29th in completion percentage (.563) — but he has been just as effective in the pocket. Panthers Coach Ron Rivera said the team’s offense has changed to fit Newton’s skill sets since Week 13 last year, the last time Carolina lost a game. It now incorporates no-huddle situations and allows the quarterback to call the play.

Newton has a 110.7 quarterback rating when the Panthers are tied or trailing, and he has shined in the fourth quarter with a 117.6 rating when his team is within seven points. The Auburn product has accomplished all this with a pedestrian group of wide receivers. Carolina lost its top wideout, Kelvin Benjamin, in August because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and the team lacks a quality receiving option outside of tight end Greg Olsen, who has accounted for 28.3 percent of Newton’s targets this season. Olsen leads the team with 45 receptions for 664 yards and five touchdowns.

Anyone else a bit worried about Riley vs. Olsen? Hope he continues to step up his game.

Excerpt

Washington G Spencer Long, C Josh LeRibeus G Brandon Scherff vs. Carolina DT Star Lotulelei, MLB Luke Kuechly, DT Kawann Short

The Redskins’ interior linemen will have their hands full. The Panthers run a 4-3 front, but Lotulelei often lines up over the center, or one of the A gaps, drawing a double team from the guard and center to free Kuechly (who led the NFL in tackles last season and averages seven a game this year) to get into the backfield. Meanwhile, Scherff will try to stop Short, who leads the team with six sacks. Long, LeRibeus and Scherff must be on point both in execution and communication. It’s important that Washington controls the line of scrimmage so running backs Alfred Morris and Matt Jones can get going.

Washington ILB Perry Riley Jr. vs. Carolina TE Greg Olsen

After a woeful performance against New England, Riley rebounded nicely against New Orleans, notching two pass deflections and an interception. He’ll face the challenge of limiting Olsen, who is Newton’s favorite target. The 6-5, 253-pound tight end leads Carolina with 45 catches for 664 yards and five touchdowns. (Receiver Ted Ginn Jr. ranks a distant second with 25 catches for 408 yards and three TDs). Olsen moves the chains for the Panthers, producing first downs on 32 of his receptions.
