Hearing about Kerr tying Jerry Sloan made me look this up.

By the end of the playoffs Kerr should pass Red Auerbach and Larry Brown too (he's at 98, they are 99 and 100)

Spo is at 101 and counting, Doc at 109 and counting

The big 3 after them are of course Pop (169), Riley (171), and Jackson (229)

Think Larry Brown's 100 wins is actually pretty impressive, given that he's never had a top 10 NBA player of all time at one point. You could argue maybe not even top 25.

For that reason and many others I think Larry Brown is the GOAT basketball coach...not just NBA either (won a title with Kansas)

Won an NBA title with no superstars. Won an NCAA title. Took Iverson and a bunch of stiffs to the Finals. Won everywhere he went as a coach, without big stars like you said.

This means you’re predicting Golden State to
win the series.

That 2004 Pistons team was deep. Chauncey Billups, Rip Hamilton, Sheed, Big Ben, Mehmet Ohkur, Tayshaun Prince, Corliss Williamson.

That’s a championship team right there; even with no true superstar.

Dude...depth is great but stars win rings. You downplaying his coaching? That team was a "championship team right there" only BECAUSE they had a God level coach

Brown is definitely one of the best basketball coaches of all time. And took Detroit to the Finals both of the seasons he was there. But Rick Carlisle had them in the Conference Finals the year before Larry. And Flip took em that far three more years in a row after he left.

That team (the bulk of it) made six straight conference finals with three different coaches.

Kobe and Shaq wanting a divorce was big too.

And screw Bob Horry.

But Detroit had stars. They weren’t superstars, but Rip, Chauncey, and Sheed were all good enough to take over a game. And you got the best defensive player in the game at the time in Big Ben. Truth is Detroit became an elite team as soon as they traded for Sheed.

Well, he could pass Red and tie Larry and still lose this series.

True, but I was thinking actual “should” pass would be 101 wins. I was thinking about Larry more than Red.

No….

You are just overplaying a guy with 1 career ring.

Excellent coach, no doubt.

But to put him above Pop and Phil is crazy talk.

Comparable to rating Kobe ahead of LeBron and MJ.

It's even less objective than GOAT player discussions. Rings matter even less for coaches. Factoring in lack of superstars, success in multiple locations in both college and pros, I stand by it. It's not like he's great and the others aren't. They are all up there, like MJ and Magic and Kareem and LeBron are all up there.

They had a bunch of all-stars. I don't consider that the same but I still agree with your point. All were good enough to play like stars, I just wouldn't consider any of them stars. Billups - 5x AS, Hamilton 3x AS, Rasheed 4x AS. Plus Prince and Wallace were damn good defenders, Big Ben a great one. Prince was underrated. They had some good role players and decent depth too.

Hence me saying they were stars, but not superstars. They were good enough to make it to the all star game.

And they are the only title winners in history not have at least one superstar. Thanks to the Brown GOAT.

Not the same imo. I see 3 different tiers but I would say Rasheed and Billups could be listed as either depending on the time of their careers. Rip was an AS level player imo.

All-Stars - multi time AS, not quite on the star level. (ex: Middleton, CJ McCollum)
Stars - more than a handful of AS's that can take over a game but don't do it consistently as a superstar. (Ex: Paul George, Pascal Siakam)
Superstars - one a handful in the league (ex: Giannis, Steph)
