A source said that 49ers defensive line coach Jim Tomsula either will interview or already has interviewed for the job as the University of Pittsburgh’s head coach. Former coach Todd Graham left five days ago to take the job at Arizona State, after former 49ers coach Dennis Erickson was fired at ASU.
Tomsula replaced the fired Mike Singletary last year for the season finale in St. Louis. Tomsula is also highly regarded by the 49ers and his players. 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said players and coaches try to get on bus three while going to the airport. That’s the bus Tomsula always sits on, and players and coaches feed off his energy and humor.
Tomsula would appear to be a perfect fit for Pitt. He has a tremendous record as a coach, including developing the 49ers front seven, which might be the best in the NFL. Before coming to the 49ers in 2007, Tomsula, 43, was a successful head coach in NFL Europa before the league folded.
Part of his coaching career was spent at his alma mater, Catawba College in North Carolina. He began there as a volunteer defensive line coach in 1997. He also worked part-time as a carpeting salesman and lived out of his car for part of the time while coaching at Catawba.
