Timmy: 4.00 67 One
Chez: 3.67 44 Two
Cain: 3.67 89 Two
Bum: 3.11 56 Two
Vogs: 3.40 60 (One)

ERA Tier is a rough measure of where a pitcher ranks in the NL in terms of ERA, where each tier is comprised of about 15 qualified starters. I.e., qualified ERA of 1-15 is Tier One, 16-30 is Tier Two, etc. Note that there are roughly about 65 qualified pitchers every year. My assumption is that fifth starters in general will not qualify as that slot is usually filled by AAAA pitching, or spot starters who will not stay in the rotation long enough to qualify. There are your occasional Cardinal and Nat staffs where all five qualify, but these are balanced out by Diamondback and Cub staffs where only three do. Current Tier cutoffs are:

One -- ERA < 3.25
Two -- ERA < 3.70
Three -- ERA < 4.75
Four -- ERA < 6.50

Note that ERA gets pretty bleak in Tier Four. Also note that Vogey's Tier Ranking is in parens b/c doesn't actually qualify.

Using these Tier rankings, the NL starting staffs break down as follows:

1. SF
2. ATL
3. LA, PHI
5. STL, PIT, FLA

Bullshit!!

Everyone knows the Phils have the best rotation in the bigs, hands down.

That's true...there must be noise in the stats. Besides, who needs stats anyway.

IIRC, GP did a tier breakdown last year that was much more sophisticated...I wonder if he'd reprise his efforts? :eyebrows:
