Pitcher: Average PQS, QS%, ERA Tier

Tim: 4.00, 73, I
Chez: 3.91, 55, II
Cain: 3.73, 73, III
Bum: 3.36, 64, II
Vogs: 3.29, 57, (I)

Notes -- Timmy's average PQS is amazing; he AVERAGES a dominant start. Chez isn't far behind. Cain is barely a III starter; one good outing and he'll be a II. Bum has seven consecutive good to great starts since his disasterous first four starts. Vogs broke the string of consecutive PQS starts of >= 3 with a 2 last night; he would have had a 4 if one of his hits had been a K.

Scary that there is room for improvement with those numbers (except maybe Timmy and Chez). Thanks for the data compilation.

My gut tells me that Durty has had a bad year, but then I look at his numbers...

Am I a pantshatter? :(

Nah...it's Pantshatter Effect; you've been tainted.

Now wipe that poop off your shoes.

Following up with more PQS analysis. Recall that every start is rated from 0-5. Dominant starts are 4 or 5 and Disaster starts are 0 or 1. DOM is a percentage of dominant starts and DIS is the percentage of disaster starts. The rough breakdown of DOM and DIS:

DOM > 40% is good; > 50% is great; > 70% is elite
DIS < 20% is good; < 10% is elite

Maybe of interest to nobody, but if you want to see why the Giants were 16-12 in May despite their anemic offense, which was bookended by losing Pablo Sandoval for 5-6 weeks at the start of the month and Buster Posey for the season at the end of the month, you can just look at that May stat: 79% DOM (PQS of 4 or 5), 7% DIS (PQS of 0 or 1). Only the most elite pitchers in the majors do that. We are talking Lincecum, Cliff Lee, and Roy Halladay elite. Yet the Giants staff did that as a unit in May.

As a fucking UNIT. That's pretty incredible. More stats (for 2011):

Timmah DOM 89 DIS 9
Chez Dom 70 DIS 0
Cainer DOM 78 DIS 9
Bum DOM 56 DIS 18
Vogs DOM 71 DIS 14

I seriously doubt that there has been as good a SP staff in the last 30 years. I know it's an old rant, but worth repeating:

Enjoy this staff. Right now. It's historically special.

I dont actually expect you to do it, but I will request anyway...

Can you compare this to the Phils this year, the Braves of the 90's and the Snakes from the late 90's, early 2Ks?

Maybe the O's from the 70s or the A's from the late 80s?

I might give the Filths a whirl. I don't think you can compare the Palmer Orioles b/c the game has changed too much in terms of leaving starters in.
