Ugh, not a fan. For whatever positives Hurdle brings in building relationships, and harboring a good atmosphere he gives away in horrendous gameday management.

I didn't necessarily want to see him fired, but an extension, no thanks.

We used to give Bochy hell for that with the Padres then he went to SF and won a couple of World Series.

True, but it's the last thing the Pirates need is another impediment.

Clint Hurdle seems like the perfect bench coach, but in over his head when making real time/in game decisions.

clint doesnt seem to be a natural strategist.
he does seem to have great relational abilities and that is the main ingredient for his success.

because of his insufficiencies tactically, he either doesnt think, or goes the other way and over thinks and trips himself up with trivial, or by the book execution.

would rather have waited to see how this year goes before i would extend anyone when we have had such huge extremes, within the same year, 2 years in a row. very odd

MLBtv just had a show about the top 10 managers in MLB, and it got me thinking...

If you do not have a top 10 manager (top 1/3), is it worth the risk to let yours walk in favor of a roll of the dice? Of course, top 10 is VERY subjective, and managers could be considered the same way as prospects, ie, your guy may not be a stud now, but he could be in 2 years.

Hurdle has been around for a while now. I do not know his ins-and-outs that well, but my general feeling is that he is not a young/new manager. He is what he is (a good filler). Is it worth extending him when he does not appear to be elite?

Extend Bochy? Sure.
Extend Scioscia? Sure.
Extend Mattingly? No way.
Extend Girardi? Over-rated, but OK...

Extend Hurdle????

Just curious who was on said list as a top 10 manager.

from memory and in no particular order...

Baker
Bochy
Girardi
Johnson (??)
Leyland
Melvin
Washington
Showwalter
Madden
Gonzalez (??)

Scioscia was mentioned in a bunch of side lists, but did not make the "official" list. I thought that was odd.

I'm with element.

The Pirates need a manager who is good at both relationships and tactics (e.g., Jim Leyland). Hurdle seems to be excellent on the relationships side..... but significantly below average on the tactical side.

By the way, that blurb on MLBTR is wrong, in that it states that the Pirates "peaked with a 64-54 mark." The Pirates were never at 64-54 last year. They actually peaked at 16 games over .500 after winning on August 1, at 60-44 (.577)..... and then matched their season's best at 16-over when they won on August 6 for a record of 62-46 (.574). By August 15, they had fallen to 64-53, but won on August 16, for a record of 65-53.

They fell to 10-games-over (67-57) for the first time on August 23. The last time they were 10-over was on August 29, at 70-60. After that date, they went 9-23 to finish out the season..... and after peaking at 62-46 on August 6, they went 17-37. That second consecutive monumental collapse should have been enough to PREVENT Hurdle from getting an extension..... but I guess I understand the front office looking at the Pirates' record for the entire season. (I often wonder how Russell would have done as manager in 2011 and 2012, if he hadn't been "scape-goated" after the 2010 season.)

I gotta feeling that, unless the Pirates have a good first half, Hurdle will be "toast" anyway (as will Huntington).

Mags...I agree he will be fired if they start bad so this extension doesn't mean much. But with the rest of you I don't get it, outside being colorful there isn't much game time decision making. Heck if they wanted that why not bring back Legendary Lloyd!
