After taking 2 of 3 from the Astros (what'll we do without the Astros next season?), the Pirates get swept by the Cubs. Yes, a 2-4 home stand against the two worst teams in the National League indicates that the slide is continuing.

The Pirates' record has fallen to 72-67, and a winning season seems to be in ever-more-serious jeopardy. Additionally..... don't look now, but the Brewers are only 3-1/2 games behind the Pirates, even after losing to the Cards today.

In 39 games since the 100-game mark, the Pirates have given up 203 runs, an average of 5.21 runs per game. The Pirates record in those games is 14-25 (.359).

I'm not looking forward to visiting Cincinnati. :nonod:

I'm going back to my 80-82 prediction, getting swept on the last weekend. Would be appropriate at this point.
Even that is looking rather optimistic at this point.

The slide continues with the loss of 3 straight to the Reds, 6 straight overall, 8 of their last 10, 24 of their last 34, and a 14-28 (.333) record since the 100-game mark. The Pirates find themselves at only 2 games over .500 with 20 games to play..... and only 1/2 game ahead of Milwaukee. In other words, the Pirates look remarkably bad.

:burt:

In the 42 games since the 100-game mark, the Pirates have given up 214 runs, for an average of 5.10 runs per game. Unfortunately, while the pitching has been showing some slow improvement, the offense essentially has disappeared again. This year's post-100-game collapse is approaching last year's (19-43/.306) in severity.

:burt:

At this point, it looks almost inevitable that the Pirates will extend the CLS to 20 seasons. It is too disgusting and disheartening to continue to chronicle another total collapse..... so this will be my last update.

yes. disheartening.

Well the strange thing is that the Pirates won't officially clinch a losing season for at least another 12 games. At no point in the last decade have the Pirates been able to stay respectable into the last 2 weeks of the season.
And frankly the Cubs are so bad that it shouldn't be such a stretch to imagine the Pirates getting back on track against them either. I still have a bad feeling that the series against Atlanta will be relevant and we will be forced to face the same demons again.
