I have been making these posts in the "magic number" thread, but it seems more appropriate to post them here..... and to avoid further pollution of Illinest's original intent. (Hope that thread outlasts this one..... and that the Pirates break the CLS.)

- Since the 100-game mark, the Pirates are 7-11 (.389). If they maintain that pace through season's end, they will finish at 82-80.

- In those 18 games, the pitching staff has given up 109 runs (averaging over 6 runs per game).

- The Pirates have given up at least 5 runs for 10 consecutive games.

In my view, the Pirates and Burnett were lucky to win this one and avoid a sweep by the Dodgers. Still hoping for a resurgence of the pitching staff, I'm kind of disappointed that they optioned Locke back to AAA. Seems that he might have given the starting staff a lift.

I think this spell the pitching is in is nothing more than just that. It'll pass. The offense has been fine, so once it does pass, we'll get back to winning ball games.

I believe we will be fine, probably not good from here on out, but average at least, which will get us a lot of wins in September when our schedule is weaker.
Karstens is coming to to the point in the season when he started running off some good performances last year.

One last thing, it is funny how things work out. If the Pirates hadn't tried to rush Morton back, he might not have gotten injured, and we wouldn't have made the Andy Rodriguez trade. Instead, our staff could have been even stronger all year and would have had 3 pitchers looking at putting up 180-200 innings. Sorry just a random thought.

After taking 2 of 3 from the Cards in their house, might the Pirates' slide be over?

Since the 100 game mark, the Pirates are 9-12 (.429).

- If they continue at that pace through season's, they'll finish with 85 wins.

- If they play .500 ball between now and season's end, they'll finish with 88 wins.

- If they match their winning percentage for the season so far (67-54, .554), they'll finish with 90 wins.

The Pirates gave up a total of 9 runs in the 3 games against St. Louis. Since the 100 game mark, they have given up 118 runs in 21 games, for an average of 5.62 runs per game.

pirates did slide some,at one point they had a healthy lead slide down to a tie with the cards won 2 out of 3 and are back at a 2 game lead,,,time will tell if they can stay ahead of the cards,,,,

A sweep by the "lowly" Padres..... looks like the slide is continuing:

- The pitching staff has given up 132 runs in the 24 games since the 100-game mark (5.5 runs per game.)

- The Pirates are 9-15 (.375) in those 24 games.

- If they continue at that pace through season's end, they will finish at 81-81.

- If they play .500 ball from here on out, they will finish at 86-76.

This team is in dire need of a winning streak.

Hmmm..... I guess I'll update this thread after each series for as long as it seems relevant.

The slide continues. The Pirates lose 2 of 3 at home to the Brewers, leaving their season at 68-59 (.535).

- The pitching staff has given up 145 runs in 27 games (5.37 runs per game)
since the 100-game mark.

- The Pirates are 10-17 (.370) in those 27 games.

- If they continue that pace through season's end, they will finish at 81-81.

This team remains in dire need of a winning streak.

The slide has been arrested, at least temporarily, with the Bucs taking 2 of 3 from the Cards and improving their record to 70-60 (.538). Pirate pitching was terrific in the series giving up a total of 4 runs in 3 games, including 2 shutouts.

The staff has given up 149 runs in 30 games since the 100-game mark, bringing their average down to 4.97 runs per game. The Pirates are 12-18 (.400) during that time.

Hopefully, we've seen the beginning of a resurgence. (Out, OUT, damned slide!)

With the 3-game sweep by the Astros, the Pirates' slide has emphatically resumed. Their record has fallen to 70-63 (.526), and they are 12-21 (.364) since the 100-game mark.

In those 33 games, the pitching staff has given up 173 runs, an average 0f 5.24 runs per game.

Can this team get well against Houston and Chicago? We need to hope so. If they don't, we're looking another losing season squarely in the eye.

I'm still not worried.

I have no basis for not being worried, but I have too many other things about which to be worried, so I won't be worried about the Pirates.

That's a very commendable attitude, Darkstone.

Heck, the worst teams in baseball typically win at least one game in three..... and the best teams lose at least one game in three.

Although the Pirates can hardly be grouped with the "best teams" at this point, I remain hopeful that we can take the next two games from the Astros. But I'm not worried..... I'm used to it. (And as you indicated, there are a bunch of more important things to worry about in today's world.)

I recorded the game as I was out this afternoon. When I got home I turned on the TV and Tekulve mentioned we lost 5-1 just as the coverage was wrapping up. I deleted it in disgust without even watching. :(

I'm going back to my 80-82 prediction, getting swept on the last weekend. Would be appropriate at this point.
