Pineda has started the season out well for the Yankees, but after the whole "what's on his hand" issue, he gets ejected for what appears to be pine tar on his neck during todays start (2nd inning). With todays technology, why are pitchers still trying to doctor the ball - there's video evidence!

The thing that gets me about this is that Pineda doesn't need to cheat. His stuff is nasty enough without having to use a foreign substance. Or at least it was his rookie year.

I don't doubt that pitchers use substances to get grips on the ball all the time. I just think its funny how obvious he is about it.

You were caught on camera doing it the first time and got away with it, but you're going to test your luck again the start immediately following that incident? Lol this guy is beyond stupid

Not just the next start, but facing the same team who the umps threw under the bus for not notifying them of it the first time.

"Jesus Montero, the other end of the 2012 trade that sent Michael Pineda to the Yankees, was also caught with a dark foreign substance on his hands tonight. When asked about it after the game, Montero was quoted as saying 'It's just cake,' through a mouthful of what appeared to be German Chocolate."

There are no true consequences to his actions. Sure, he'll get suspended - probably 10 days or two starts.

But, he was going to be on an innings limit this year anyway, probably around 170. He'll still get his 170 IPs, even with the suspension, assumming he doesn't go on the DL at some point.

Update: Pineda has officially been suspended for a predictably low 10 games, or two starts. The double standard when it comes to cheating in MLB would be hilarious if it wasn't so stupid. You get caught taking PEDs, which the league has to test for and which isn't usually physically noticeable, you get suspended for a minimum of half a season. You get caught using a physically noticeable foreign substance to doctor a ball, you get suspended for two starts (if you're a starting pitcher). Both are cheating, but the less obvious form of cheating gets you suspended for half a season or more and the more obvious form of cheating gets you suspended for less than 10% of a season. Does that make sense to anybody else? Cheating is cheating, isn't it?

Baseball doesn't care if anyone cheats. But people care that baseball doesn't care, so baseball pretends to care when it's obvious. There wouldn't be testing for PEDs if baseball could decide for itself.

I honestly don't give two shits about pitchers who use pine tar. When games are cold and wet and pitchers are having a hard time gripping the ball, wouldn't using pine tar result in less hit batters?

Update: During a simulated game he pitched while on suspension, Pineda hurt his back and will be out 3-4 weeks. I think it's pretty safe to say that this trade was a bust for both teams.

Not at all. While the Yankees continue to get less and less Pineda, the Mariners are acquiring more and more Montero. It's the trade that keeps on giving.
