That is why he got the big contract. Another thing. If they waited another year or two maybe his contract is even larger. Without the 2 years of injuries, and better production, it would not be that bad in hindsight considering other huge current contracts. Right now Howard has the 40th largest contract (10th in average annual value, $25M) in baseball. Albert Pujols got $240,000,000 (2012-21, 16th in average annual value, $24M).

Like I stated jvett. It still does not give the FO the opportunity to lose their marbles and go completely bat shit crazy? So Howard walks. Somebody else would have picked up the tab and we would have found a replacement who in all likelihood would have been younger, cheaper, and certainly not has constraining in the long-term as what happened.

It's all hindsight thinking. Any five year contract, $80M - $125M, for a 30 year old power hitter becomes sick when you end up with injuries and several bad, unproductive seasons.
