That's exactly why I don't want to get fixated on any one guy either! The more I look at it, the more Im hoping we hire this guy or Wilkes. Which means we will likely hire Wade or Bradley.![]()

I don't think Pettine is all that great a coach, though he might be an upgrade from Barry.
Per Disney:
"Pettine then coached Buffalo's defense in 2013. He inherited a defense that ranked 26th in points and 22nd in yards allowed. In his one season, the Bills were 20th in points and 10th in yards.
He was then hired as the Browns head coach.
Defensively, the Browns ranked ninth in yards and 23rd in points his first season. They were 29th and 25th, respectively, in his second."
It looks like he improves the defense in one year, then the league catches up to what he is doing, and his defense tanks.
I don't disagree with you, Sharkinva.
I'm just saying that his teams go backwards, and apparently one of his ideas to build his defense is to only ask a few of his players to "do the thinking" for the defense, so that the dumber players - who might be really talented nonetheless - can just go ball.
That's a stupid concept to begin with. Everybody should know as much as possible about their position.
The only good thing I can find on him is that like the previous poster said, he is known to be an attacking kind of coach, not a "tampa 2," (which doesnt work), or a "rush with four subpar pass rushers, drop 7 into the secondary, and watch the opposing team march right down the field," kind of coach, a la Joe Barry.
Edit: Also, I like the idea of having multiple players line up in multiple spots on consecutive plays. That's a great idea to confuse the offense.

Agreed. How hard is it for these university grads to learn to contain, stunt, spin, bull rush, bluff or wait for the ball to be snapped. If i was a defensive lineman, i'd be insulted this coach claims he had to tell some players to just go get the QB. was he too stupid to simplify and yet still teach a concept? Is he a lazy coach? If we stick with a 3-4 and fail under him i'm sure he'd say guys like kerrigan and baker were just not smart enough to execute plays.
Again, we know what we will get with Gus. Isn't it time for a 4-3. Its been 3 years and we still don't have a decent front 7. We've got Kerrigan, and Baker up front...nothing else. In the 4-3 these average guys can play at a higher level.
Dude I know you got a man crush thing going for Bradley. And if it werent for the whole buddy hire aspect, I might be pulling for that outcome.
But two things.
1. It seems we are HIS fallback plan.
2. He sounds like another Joe Barry with a better resume. Players will love him as a good guy coach, but there have been questions of if he can actually bring a level of discipline that our defense needs.
Come on man. How many kids did you play with in High School, or college for that matter who were dumb as rocks, but got passing grades because they were uber talented on the football field. Or at Basketball. Or Hockey if you live up north?? Sure you are going to get some guys who are actually intelligent AND play football. But by and large, a good number of these guys were marginal students at best. For fuck sake Dexter Manley couldnt even read, and he was one of the most fearsome pass rushers of his generation, possibly ever. Fact is, some of these guys are playing off of pure talent and athletic ability. And you can teach them to be better at what they do. But if you think you are going to get 11 spacial engineers on the defense capable of redefining the time quantum flux theory...... Shit half the NFL players I have met couldnt figure out how to change a tire. Ricky Irvin was one of the best RBs we had in DC not named Riggins or Portis.... but I know I had to go reset his alarm code every couple of months because he would manage to lock out the 5 digit code. My point being, you will have some guys who are singularly setup to do a particular task. Trying to make this uber fancy defense, when we suck at the basics is why we had failures with Haz and Barry.
Man, I can't really argue with that. BUT, it does bother me that a coach looking for work will flat out say that.
There were a ton of guys I knew in sports or even guys I played with in school or tournaments that didn't follow assignments and got away with it due to talent, but our coaches eventually pulled them or sat them down to see where their heads were at. Coaches also would address those screw ups in practice and demand better.
I could be wrong but some of Pettine's expressions came off as "hey these guys are limited or can't be taught so this is what we'll do to deal with them" instead of "I'll work harder to help these guys understand what their assignments are and I expect the leaders of the team to help them be in the right positions.
