Nice deal, Cooke is a great fit in Pittsburgh and good on the third line.

Good sign. $1.8 million hit per year makes that a very survivable contract for the Pens cap. I'm going to assume Cooke could have received more on the open market. Probably not much more, but a little more.

Surprised the Bruins didn't make a run for him.

;)

Oh, they'll take a run at him next season.
oh... 'for'... nevermind.

$1.8 million per year? Way overpaid for what he brings.
and if history is a guide, he will completely disappear now.

Way overpaid??? He got a $600,000 dollar raise from last year. He is the only agitator on the team, and personally, I felt he played some of his best hockey the past two post-seasons. I'm glad he's back in the fold. The Pens third line is one of the best 3rd lines in the league, and cooke is a huge part of it.

Good, solid 3rd liner..... but 1.8m is indeed overpaying for him. Don't know about "way" overpaid, but, he's 1.5m max. Heart is nice and all, but not every shotblocker/agitator with not much speed nor hands should make 1.8m

I can agree with that. Is Cooke worth more than 1.5 million?? Probably not. But being over that threshold by $300,000 is very survivable. The Pens are paying Chris Kunitz $3.6 per, and that is easily the worst contract of all the Pens forwards.

Cookie has had two seasons of 15 goals and 30 pts since being in Pittsburgh, and he was the leading goal scorer of all the pens wingers in this past post-season. I'm glad he's back in black and gold.

so yeah... 50% raise is pretty significant, no?
you say "agitator" like it's a good thing. He's a coward to the core.

for a team with top-heavy salaries, I think $1.8 million is a bit rich for a 3rd line plugger. I think unless he's a special player in some regard (and clearly I don't think he is), his role can be replaced by someone making $7-800k.

the last time he got a raise from $700k to $1.2 million, he absolutely and completely disappeared. became a cancer and a distraction in the locker room with ego issues.
i will admit he has been more effective in the last year or so than he was earlier, but I still think he's quite overpaid for what he brings.

Agree to disagree. I love his style of play. He's a coward, but he still sticks it in the craw of most opponents he plays against. Particularly playing in the atlantic with teams like philly and the rags, who both have their fair share of "agitators". Avery has a cap hit of $1.9 million, and Lappy plus Carcillo combine for about $2.0 million. They all provide the same style of play that Cooke gives the Pens.

Wow, and he still dresses the way he does, well there's no excuse then

It's actually $1.9. I had to double check it on numbers.com. His contract is worth $4.0 per season, but his cap hit is $1.9.

lappy + carcillo are 2 players.. i know you're making the money spent on agitator compariosn.. but its still 2 players.. kind defeats your argument if you ask me

i think cooke is a little overpaid.. not by a whole lot tho..

kunitz at 3.4 or whatever is pretty bad.. you said worst amongst forwards, who do you think is the most overpaid on the pens, just out of curiosity?

Two players that provide the same game as compared to one? Roster spots on the top team don't come cheap. Cooke sells out to block shots a la Lappy, and he muck and grinds with the best of them on the boards, a la Carcillo, along with being a coward... a la carcillo. I'd rather the pens have that type of player combined into one, which they do in Cooke.

IMO, of all the Penguins players, I think Fleury probably makes more than what he's really worth. A $5.0 million dollar cap hit per season for very average stats. He's a number #1 pick, and he's had his fair share of fine moments, but he's also got two, possibly three of the twenty best centers in the game playing in front of him.

This is a very good signing for the Pens. The third line is complete and only costs the Pens about 6.5 million.

He scored 15 goals and 15 assists, as well as a +17. A Key member of the Pens PK unit. 3rd LW, 1.8 million.

He scored 21 goals and 28 assits, as well as a +19. A key member of the Pens PK unit. 3rd line center, 4 million.

Ok, I'm not "comparing" Cooke to Staal. My point is, for a 15 goal, 3rd line LW who plays on the top PK unit, 1.8 million is a good deal. The issue had to be length. He came down in price and the Pens added a year I bet.

well my point was teams like the flyers and pens, aka have a few guys making 5/6+ need to fill out the roster with cheap guys that can fill a role, not one that can fill most of 2 roles, if you get what i mean.. also lappy had 20 more blocked shots, almost 40 percent more.. so he doesn't block shots like lappy.. i think him and carcillo are basically the same player, with cooke being a little better defensively

music to my ears to hear you say fleury is the most overpaid guy.. been sayin it for a while that he's not as good as he's cracked up to be.. he definitely has it in him to steal games at a time, but he also goes through stretches where he's the reason the pens lose games.. nice to hear a pens fan that agrees w/ a little of that at least haha
