Johnston has been coach of the Portalnd Winterhawks for the past six seasons and has brought them to the WHL Final four times, winning once and taking them to the 2013 Memorial Cup Final where they lost to Halifax.

He does have NHL experience as an assistant coach. He spent six seasons in Vancouver as an assistant to Marc Crawford and joined Crawford’s staff in Los Angeles for two seasons.

I think Tocchet has already been guaranteed a spot, but other than him, I'm sure Mike probably does.

Johnston has a great track record in Portland and as Jim said in the OP, does have some NHL experience. He's probably leaving the Winterhawks at a good time as most of their best players will be leaving Portland and they have been stripped of some draft picks due to violating WHL policies.

That violation is a shame. Like most coaches in sports, when they get caught for bending the rules it seems like they are rarely ever there to pay the punishment.

I really don't have much of an opinion on this. We'll see. I like everything I hear about how his teams generally work.
