The Washington Football Team travels to Foxboro, Mass., Thursday to take on the New England Patriots in the first preseason game for both teams this season. The game will be aired on NFL Network.

One thing to keep an eye on is that both teams have quarterback competitions going on in camp. The Patriots selected Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the No. 15 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. But former NFL MVP Cam Newton is likely to remain the starter out of training camp to start the season, but could Jones challenge Newton for the starter job immediately? Patriots coach Bill Belichick isn’t one to tell how the quarterback competition is going.

On the other side, Washington Football Team brought in veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick to lead the team at quarterback after parting with Alex Smith in the offseason. Taylor Heinicke nearly led Washington to upset the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card game last year, throwing for 306 yards in the loss.

This preseason game could feature Jones vs. Heinicke for a majority of the snaps.

Washington Football Team Storylines

Ron Rivera made it abundantly clear that his starters will play against the Patriots on Thursday. The defense, which was second-ranked last season, is essentially the same, with the exception of William Jackson III upgrading the No. 2 corner spot, Landon Collins looking good since returning from his torn Achilles and rookies Jamin Davis and Ben St-Juste getting time with the starters. Ryan Fitzpatrick showed on Friday and in the days since that he’s going to air the ball out. If he stays healthy, keep an eye on receiving threats Terry McLaurin, Dyami Brown, Logan Thomas and Adam Humphries having nice days. Should also mention with the upgraded offensive line and recovery from his turf toe, Antonio Gibson could have a major impact both on the ground and in the receiving game, based on what he’s done in camp thus far. – Rhiannon Walker

  • New England Patriots Storylines

It’s all about the quarterbacks. Cam Newton will likely start, based on everything we’ve seen at practice, but it remains to be seen how many series he’ll get with the starters. Then when Mac Jones takes over, will he get a look with the starting line and skill players, even if it’s just for a series or two? Jones should get the most playing time, but that could also depend on how well the backup line protects him. There almost certainly won’t be any sweeping conclusions if Jones plays the vast majority of his snaps against the backup Washington defense, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be important for him to play well in his preseason debut. – Jeff Howe

Why anyone thought Heinicke was ready to step in as starter or even "ball-out" when Fitz got hurt or benched is beyond me. He would be a great story, a QB from ODU .... 1 1/4 games does not make a career. He got hurt in one of those games and now is hurt again. Don't get me wrong ... I am rooting or him just as I am rooting for Fitz and Allen. It was going to be a HUGE step.

interesting article, because if Heinicke does "ball out" thursday, the rebuttal will be it was against 2nd stringers.
Now if he does very well in two games and Fitz plays so so, then the media can now bring back a QB battle.
I need some popcorn with these stories

Im looking at Agg, both Sims, and Harmon for Wr's. Miller vs Barber for Rb's. Hemmingway vs Ricky Seal Jones. apke vs Roberts is a battle at CB. Besides Hudson. There is a battle for 5th and 6th LB. Can Cosmi win the RT job? Who will shine on PR's?

I'm going with the obvious, the first team, specifically QB and how they plan to use him. Will they limit his wildly unpredictable deep throws? Will they go ultra conservative with short pitches to RB's and slant operators. How does he do under pressure and as a starter? Does he impress or give more reason for concern. My pre-game prediction, he'll go 5 for 9 and about 60 to 80 yards with one or two questionable throws. We'll see!

RR will not show much so I anticipate we see dump offs, hitches, slants with your basic offense. Defense will likely be vanilla also. Why show much, just let them get some contact then get the starters out.

I agree, however, that other team will have players looking to impress who will also anticipate them doing exactly as you suggest. The biggest thing coming out of this game is zero injuries or physical concerns.
