He could miss some time. Worded it as a Mild hamstring injury.

I know very vague. News has been hard to get on it and this is the most I've heard so far. Atleast doesnt sound too serious.

This is from Adam Shefter.

Good news is we clinched the division...bad news is we are fighting for the bye....

At least we only play the Steelers and then our division, but I have a feeling we lose one division game. They are all on the road. Hopefully the Saints lose one more game at least.

N.O has two games against teams fighting for a playoff spot (Tennessee & Atlanta) and we have one; unfortunately our one will be against a desperate Pittsburgh team.

Well that sucks, but he's gotta sit until he's healthy. No need to rush him back with the playoffs guaranteed. This may end the 100 yard rusher streak or break the rushing TD shutout, but I don't think him missing a few games in the regular season is going to cripple the defense. Still plenty of leaders on the field with Justin Smith and Whitner... I trust Bowman to pick up the slack to close out the regular season.

This may be decided already, but if he's borderline, I'd sit him like the Ravens did to Lewis, against the Cardinals, Cowboy upset notwithstanding. I don't trust Cowboy's coaching as much as Harbaugh, even in his first year. Harbaugh will figure out a way to make Willis' absence minimized in win/loss effect. If that means sitting out the Steeler game so be it, but glad we have until the next Monday to rest it.

Hamstring injury grading

Grade 2:
What does it feel like?
Probably cannot walk properly May get occasional sudden twinges of pain during activity May notice swelling Pressing in causes pain Bending the knee against resistance causes pain Might be unable to fully straighten the knee
What can the athlete do?
Ice, compress, elevate, use crutches for 3 to 5 days See a sports injury specialist who can advise on rehabilitation
What can a Sports Injury Specialist or Doctor do?
Use sports massage techniques to speed up recovery (very important) Use ultrasound and electrical stimulation Prescribe a rehabilitation programme including stretching and strengthening exercises
Recovery time?
About 3 to 6 weeks depending on severity and if middle of muscle or at tendon joint

I should add, this is just a general description, I imagine stuff like this is also a case-by-case basis. Willis isn't locked into a 3-6 week recovery, could be a week or two?

I'm hoping that because he is a studly young athlete in pretty much the best shape one can be in, and because he has access to the best trainers and facilities that at the most he'll be out the low end of that spectrum.

No problem with Willis resting, he will be fine. The report of him having a 2 degree sprain is false.

I don't think he'll be out long as he was able to walk off on his own power with help and judging from watching the game he was standing on the sidelines smiling and chatting with teammates which tends to tell me that he'll probably be ready be ready for the Steelers on Monday.

Remember Ray Mac had a hamstring injury already this year and he missed all of one game and is fine and I didn't get the impression this one was serious either.

Patrick Willis Injury: Grade 2 Hamstring Strain Could Cost 49ers LB Arizona Game - Niners Nation

Although 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh did not provide any details about Patrick Willis' MRI at the Monday morning press conference, some news is leaking out. Matt Maiocco reported that Patrick Willis' strained hamstring would not require surgery, but that he is expected to miss practice time and probably Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Adam Schefter followed that up with a tweet that it is a grade two strain on a scale of one to three and that he could "miss a little time."

Given all that information, it seems as though it would be pretty surprising to see Willis playing this Sunday. Losing Bamm Bamm for any stretch of time is no fun, but Larry Grant looked very solid in his place on Sunday, finishing the day with a sack and tied with NaVorro Bowman for the team lead in sacks tackles.

The 49ers are not in a position to go into any sort of cruise control with the number two seed up for grabs. At the same time, it is much more important to get Patrick Willis healthy for the playoffs. If a hamstring strain doesn't heal all the way up, it can easily be aggravated. At the same time, it remains to be seen what exactly a "little time" means. We'll likely have to wait for the Week 15 practice participation reports before we have a better handle on his availability.

A hit to Willis is certainly a blow. But luckily we have 4 regular season games(weeks) left, so rest rest and MOREEEEEEEEEEEEEE rest for our #52....

Is this similar to Andre Johnsons injury?? See what happened to him when he came back.... hamstrings are nagging injuries. I would sit him until the playoffs at least and hope we get that bye. Grant played well though.

The optimistic in me says AJ has more of an injury injury history vs Willis.

Willis looked fine on the sidelines too, maybe good at hiding pain. But easily don't play the guy this sunday.

They are kind of between a rock and a hard place on this one. It's imperative that they get him back for the playoffs so he should rest, but its also imperative that they get the #2 seed and the bye or they are going nowhere in the playoffs so they may need him to play.

Fortunately, they can lose one more game and still get the bye. I'd sit him, especially after the credible performance that Grant put in Sunday in place of Willis.

Willis is tough, so I'm sure he'll be back before a normal football player could.
