McAfee attended Plum High School in his hometown of Plum, Pennsylvania, playing both soccer and football. As a senior, he borrowed $100 from a friend and played poker at an illegal poker club, turning it into $1,400. He used the funds to finance a trip to Miami to participate in the final day of a national competition highlighting the best field goal kicking prospects in America. McAfee made nine consecutive field goals, starting at 25 yards and moving five yards out each time. He narrowly missed a 70-yard field goal, with the ball missing to the right but with enough distance to make it. After returning home, he was approached in the school's lunchroom by Tony Gibson, West Virginia's recruiting coordinator, who offered him a scholarship.[1]

I heard that he had already 3-4 injuries and I think he is only 28 or 9, . He has a great personality and enjoyed watching his stints on NFLN and also his tackles on his kicks, wow

He got tired of getting more snaps than his QB.

Ugh, that new Barstool Sports show on Comedy Central is nearly unwatchable. Hope it works out for him.

punters may not make that much by NFL standards, but who has an easier job in the NFL? It is a cake walk job and you still make hundreds of thousands a year. You do everything you can to keep that gig going.

He was already 3 I think knee surgeries in and will need more down the road. If he found himself a great gig that pays well and doesn't continue to tear down his body then I don't blame him for wanting to transition out of football. Heck would not shock me to see more and more players making these kind of decisions. I don't think the playing late into your 30's thing is going to be a norm for players to try and do. The more info that comes out of the damage they are doing the more they will just shut things down.

Guy made $15M (so $10M after tax) in his NFL career. Set for life, no injury issue, and he's 30...

Might as well retire since the Colts are gonna do jack shit for the next 5 years anyway because Irsay is an idiot. At least he fired dumbass Grigson.

Anyway, might as well move on and do what he wants to do.

As for the Colts, who cares? Punters grow on trees and even though McAfee was one of the better punters in the NFL, whatever.

If he was smart with his money he could live off of the interest and whatever salary he's making from Barstool. Interesting that he left nearly 6M by retiring now.

Yah, I still agree with you considering he's a punter which granted can risk injury but it's extremely rare and if anything just your leg, which you'll get full medical treatment for.

I think I'd have stuck around for the rest of my contract if it was me. Maybe he took something he wasnt supposed to and got out before the news dropped.

I didn't realize punters had actual names.
