The last straw was the Ryan Miller trade. Pat Lafontaine was pushing to give Miller an extension. Tim Murray was pushing for a trade.
Well, I'm gonna just say I think that the Sabres made the better choice by allowing the GM to make decisions. Also...trading Miller was 1000000% the right choice.
yeah I Agree. I dont see why there is so much hubbub with that move, GM makes the decision for player movements, not sure why Pat wanted to be in control of that.
When you look at Pat's track record, you gotta think part of the issue is him. If he wanted to make all hockey choices...he should be the GM. On WHAT TEAM does the Pres make decisions instead of the GM? Why in the world would you have a GM?

Somebody needs to fetch the coffee.
My point was why would you both having a GM if your Pres was going to make all the choices on the GMs behalf. President makes all hockey decisions...GM, you get all coffee decisions! But make sure it's Tim Hortons, okay?
Yes, I was being facetious pix - The president of hockey operations should be focused on the business side of the hockey team, you have a GM to look after the player personnel decisions. I suppose the president can veto a proposed GM's transaction, but that can become a slippery slope very quickly.
*whooshing sound*
What was that?
Just something flying over my head
lol - I'm worried about my team, the current president has yet to hire a GM and when he does, will he have final say over player personnel decisions or will Burkie have the final decision? This could be messy.
The GM should make the final call, but the relationship needs to be such that if the President has a solid reason to want to overrule, he can or they can make the decision together.
Murray is looking at the on-ice product. LaFontaine was looking at the city and the franchise. Perhaps on the ice, Moving Miller was the best thing to do, and the return was great. But LaFontaine knows Buffalo, and knows how the fans like their heroes. They get behind guys who like it there and that they can look up to. He was a demi-god there, and he knows how much the fans in Buffalo still worship the likes of Rob Ray, Hasek and the French Connection. And that geriatric announcer they have. Of everyone on that team he probably felt that Miller was the best connection for those fans who like to have a guy to relate to.
I'm sure the decision was not easy and there were probably tons of tense discussions.
But one thing is for sure, he sure as hell made Murray's job 20x harder by resigning. One wrong move and the fans will turn on him for "running Patty out of town".
