Jack Sears has entered the transfer portal. After losing out on the starting job he was put fourth on the depth chart which was a head scratcher for most who thought he was at worst the second best and some thought he was the best choice. But after talking a friend of mine who has people closer to the situation it was a case of Clay saying I could put you as the back up but you're really still not going to play unless there's an injury so I'm gonna make it easier for you to go somewhere else and play. I'm not positive thats how it is but it's kinda the only think that makes sense. Clay is and has always been too nice and I could see him letting his best back up walk because he's a Jr and doesn't want him to waste another year when he's got his starter and a freshman he likes.

Sears was 3rd or 4th string.

They made him 4th on the depth chart which means you run the scout team. You dont work with the offense on that weeks game plan you're not even in those meetings. I think it's totally possible Clay told him look you're not going to be the starter so I'm going to put you far down the depth chart so it's easier for the nCAA to let go and play somewhere else. No ones going to blame a guy who's 4th string for leaving but if he put him as the backup then everyone would say he's a quitter for leaving because he might play. Again this is whats being floated around but it kinda makes sense.

Since he has his degree soon, why not? Being 4th stringer ain't gonna hack it. Sears did say he was staying at USC until December to finish his undergraduate degree. He won't have to sit out a year to play elsewhere, if he chooses to play..

True but other schools can't contact him if he's still a member of the team. He has to go into the portal and USC has to say it's ok.

Yeah, I heard similar. Only difference was I heard that if Sears wasn't named the starter, he was transferring. Agree that Clay likely put him 4th to make it easier to iustify. It may also help him to be able to be eligible right away.

Things didn't go the way he hoped (obviously). But I thought he handled it well and I think Clay tried to make it easier for him because of that.

As I understand it, Sears has entered the portal and has completely left the team:

"Helton said Sears had the option of remaining with the team while in the portal, but chose to leave the team entirely, despite writing in his statement that he informed Helton he would be available if needed.

"He thought right now for himself that it was best for him to focus on his studies, focus on being able to visit with other [schools], and he's done everything for us," Helton said. "I don't hold it against him at all. He's competed here, he's given his absolute best effort at all times, he's been a great teammate, and now he's going to be a graduate of this university, and that gives him the honor of going to play [at another school] if he chooses to."
