Plain and simple. They can't cover anyone. It's something that needs to be addressed through FA and not the draft, we need someone back there with experience. I am tired of seeing the back of everyone's number instead of the front.

funny but when they were making plays last year, nobody said anything. For pete's sake, we are playing with the 5th and 6th guys off the bench along with Jenkins and McDonald.... However, if we do spend any FA money, it needs to be on a safety...no question

I was watching Kaep stare down Boldin on a few plays and screaming "Come on Rams!" he utterly stares him down and throws to him and waits til he breaks and the Rams backs were just running around.

ksu, that area hurts us on defense every season. We passed on a couple good ones the last couple of years in favor of what we had on our roster and it's obvious what we have on our roster just simply isn't that good. Also, I don't care what anyone says either. We need to add a veteran wide receiver in next year's FA as well. Some one who will have to be double teamed which will open the field up for Austin, Cook, etc. The problem isn't Sam Bradford, the problem is the Rams have yet to complement him with a stud wide out. Teams can play us man to man 'cause they aren't scared of what we have on the field at the moment. This makes it tuff for any signal caller.

I could read Anquan Boldens lips yesterday, he was saying "you cant cover me" to our defenders, after he made a completion. Which he did frequently.

.....you look at San Francisco (Boldin), Seattle, (Harvin) and Arizona (Fitzgearld). All their QB's are surrounded with a stud pass catcher. Until the Rams invest in one, they will always be at the bottom of the NFC West. Say what you want, but it's true.

.....how many people get excited about covering Chris Givens, Brian Quick, Stedman Bailey, Tavon Austin or Austin Pettis? It would be easy for anyone to game plan against that crew, Austin has been the only threat as far as I am concerned and that is been only part time.

I'm telling you guys our DB's have regressed because of bad defensive coaching......We brought in a DC that has no previous experience and was a DB coach for a previous team that had/has an awful defense. Why would Fisher bring in a guy with no experience and no winning experience at the position he coached previously. It's a recipe for failure.

Even if im the 5th string DB i wouldn't be too concerned with covering Chris Givens since he is now prone to drop deep passes wide open passes. I'm sorry bout majority of his drops are when he has a step on the defender; he gets his hands on it but doesn't lay out for the play. Exhibit A yesterday ball is catchable and should have been a TD if caught but no he cannot make the play. We do need that Alshon Jeffrey type of player that can draw the double team, however we don't know if that person will be a FA next year or not. I just don't want Chris Givens starting as a 1 or 2, as he needs to be a 4th based on his regression this year.

What KSU said. We have good young CBs, but boldin and Vernon Davis are physical beasts. We need a physical, big CB to shut those kind of guys down.

I've learned I can't comment on every thread. Some fans just get pissed and vent. But it is funny to see people on the victory bus, then when we lose to a top 5 defense and can't score, they want to fire er'body.

agreed SJ.... totally ok to point out deficiencies but geez we do not need folks that are going to waffle with every up and down... I at least have been saying Shotty needs to go, even when we were scoring points the last couple weeks. Walton to me is not the issue on defense really. The problem is the inconsistent play of a few players (Jenkins, Finnegan,Ogletree,Langford) that have cost us victories.
I know we all say things like this every year, but this off season, the FA money needs to go to a stud Safety and we MUST MUST MUST come out of the draft with a true, game changing WR. Period end of list.

It is obvious we have a lot of holes on both sides of the ball. As has been mentioned already, you don't come out of the complete train wreck we were in overnight that took 10-15 years to create by complete chaos and ineptitude in the organization from top to bottom. This reconstruction project will certainly not be accomplished in a year in 3/4's that is for damn sure, not with the some of the stupidity that seems to permeate this franchise for whatever reason.

One has to wonder whether the problem lies with the players or if it lies with Walton.

I'm going with Walton. 2nd year players just don't regress out of no where. I think once fisher started taking more control over the D things started getting better.

I agree. I think Walton is in a job over his head. And remember, Fisher whiffed on Rob Ryan because he was afraid Ryan would push for the 3-4 defense and our personnel is geared for the 4-3. That might be a legitimate concern but Ryan sure as hell would know what to do with the guys we have on defense.

Walton often has the receivers playing almost 10 yards off the ball at the snap. With the Rams pass rush, wouldn't press coverage (especially against someone like Boldin who isn't going to elude the press with quickness or speed) make a lot more sense? Walton is still too afraid to rely on the safeties for help over the top.

Yea Shopson, that 20 yard deep krap or as Mike Mayock put it, the 100-yard prevent defense puts no trust at all in the safeties. Now I get our safeties are really young but how many times have we gotten killed by that huge hole right behind the linebackers left by the safeties playing 10-20 yards deep on nearly every play. WTH??

Ya i just don't get it. We did it at times last year but it seemed that our guys knew where they had to be. Maybe due to having two vetern safeties in Dahl and Mikelle. Maybe we should of thought twice before letting both of them walk in the same year.
and I agree on Boldin. You play off him he's gonna know where to sit in coverage. The guy knows how to get open. Other teams have shut him down this year by playing press coverage on him. Even DB's that are lesser than Jenkins and Johnson. I just don't get it.
I will say that the major decline in play of Finnegan has had a lot to do with our Secondary declining as well. Last year (while he wasn't the best DB) he played solid and gave the guys great pointers. Which I haven't seen this year. It's definitely cyclical
