Why have P. Smith covering air while still giving up a 3rd & long first down is a real head scratcher. I will always question Manusky and perhaps others (Tomsula) are as well.

I think the question would be why would the D be in a 3-4 on 3rd and long? Normally they go into a 4-2-5 or 4-1-6. Kerrigan normally puts his hand (or another OLB) in the dirt and plays DE. Now they may have done some sort of zone where they dropped the DE (Kerrigan or Smith) and rushed a DB.

Understood as well but wasn't it Tomsula who didn't want to return this year? Had to be talked into returning by players and coaches. Things could get interesting if the defensive unit struggles like they did down the stretch this year early on.

Because our great DC thought he would "show" but bail into basically a prevent with both OLB taking the flats, 4 deep. Unfortunately, he out-thot himself because those seam hole shots are usually there for bigger TE's like Ertz who can also box out a smaller defender should the catch be somewhat contested. In this case, an easy reception for a 1st down.

I understand your point and am not totally disagreeing. I am sure he was trying to "trick" the offense but a good QB should pick up on that and take advantage. I am not against the idea of disguising your D but on 3rd and long I don't think you are fooling anyone.

Well, I don't think a throw to the flats would have resulted in a first down regardless of whether we were playing 1/2, 1/3 or 1/4 on the backend. Whatever trick he was trying to fool the QB with, didn't really give much credence to down and distance. The ball was going downfield as a result, so why be worried about dropping potential rushers, and better yet, to an area of space which neither are very good at covering to cover no one. The defensive call made no sense in this situation.

Reasons why others were questioning Manusky last year. Possibly why Tomsula had 2nd thoughts about returning. Or maybe not...
