ASHBURN, Va. – The hard part for the Redskins is to really know where Robert Griffin III's game is at this offseason. They know he’s working hard; they know he’s trying. But is he succeeding? He’s had days where he’s looked good going through progressions and other days where it’s been more of a struggle.

But it’s always hard to know a true progress at this point. The defense is not going full-go to sack him – so when he gets outside the pocket, would that have happened in a game? That’s what the coaches must try and decide. And that’s why this time of the year can be a little deceiving – the games will be so much more revealing. He’s clearly worked on his mechanics, but, again, wait until the games begin to see where they’re really at. Here's my RG III report:

  • There was one play Tuesday in which Griffin connected with Pierre Garcon on a deep crossing pattern – but he might have been sacked on the play. So it’s tough to accurately tell if this was a good or bad play.

  • The point of saying all that: Whatever is said about his performance, take it with a grain of salt. At times Griffin looks a bit shaky; at times he shows his ability. Griffin showed a little of both on one play in which he escaped pressure to the left and Garcon turned and sprinted down that sidelines. He was open, but Griffin overthrew him by a good five yards. Maybe more. It’s the type of play Griffin will have to complete more often this season; it feeds into his strength.

  • But one play later Griffin did a nice job hitting Rashad Ross deep down the left side. Ross got between the corner and safety on that side (David Amerson and Dashon Goldson). Almost looked like a little coverage breakdown, but it wasn’t a huge one. Still, Griffin made a nice throw.

  • I wasn’t crazy about how he fared in the red zone during a two-minute drill on two throws in particular. On one play – the offense needed a touchdown -- Griffin was forced to his left when he spotted a receiver over the middle. So he threw back to the middle – where Duke Ihenacho nearly intercepted the pass. It was a dangerous throw and a bad decision. (Last week, he threw an interception at the goal line).

  • Later on the same drive, with three seconds left on the clock, Griffin slid to his right and lofted pass high to his target. His feet were OK, the base looked good but he was under a little pressure and seemed to throw off his back foot (tough to fully tell from my angle) and it resulted in an overthrow.

  • One of his best throws occurred from inside the 10-yard line later in the day, during another 11-on-11 session. This time, Griffin threw a perfect fade pass to receiver Ryan Grant in the left corner against corner David Amerson. The coverage wasn’t bad, but the pass was spot on and Grant made the catch. The defense yelled that he was out of bounds, but I’ll be the official here: He was in bounds.
well the red zone is an issue for Rg3 but again failing in OTA's hopefully means lesson learned

Nice post, again thanks for posting them!

My questions based on what's here:

1. Is Quigley here to play Guard or Tackle? What's the back story? Who are they unhappy with at either position or is this insurance because of lingering recovery times for Trent and/or Moses?

2. Why is Thomas out?

3. Is the bulked up N. Paul working more in blocking situations? Conversely, is Paulsen working more on running routes?

quigley was signed to play tackle . i am not sure what to read into here because we signed will smith, a tackle, as well . my take is perhaps compton is in trouble add to it cofield getting extra work from callahan and we will see

thomas appears to be out because of missed assignments last season and i believe the emergence of duke inacho as a guy who is pushing for starting time and johnson (who can play FS ) while thomas is limited to SS

paul is playing the same role as last season . his blocking was suspect in line mainly because of his size and bulk not because of technique . word out of OTA's is paulson is improved as a blocker and receiver but the truth is the skins te's have blocking issues

hope that sheds some light on what i think is happening
